UPPERVILLE, VA, January 19, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Edith M. Smart with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Edith M. Smart celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Educators play an extremely important role in the development of young people everywhere, as it is their responsibility, in tandem with parents, to provide students with a foundation that will prepare them to meet academic and social challenges for the rest of their lives. Beginning with her role as an elementary school teacher in Gibson Island, MD, Ms. Smart has dedicated more than 30 years of her life to teaching others how to navigate the world around them.
After teaching young children in the late 1950s, Ms. Smart went on to serve as a leader for the Northern Cook County Council of the Girl Scouts from 1962 to 1964. In 1970, she became treasurer of the Near & Far Aid Association, a fundraising organization committed to eradicating poverty in and around Fairfield County, VA. She was also elected vice president and president of the organization and served as chairman of the Southport-Westport Antiques Show, which became one of its biggest and most widely anticipated social events. Her work and involvement helped to transform Near & Far Aid into the community bastion it is today.
Ms. Smart has been involved in conservation efforts for more than two decades, previously acting as an instructor and guide for the Mill River Wetland Committee and chairman of the Westport, CT Nature Center of Environmental Activities. For 10 years she was a trustee of the Connecticut chapter of The Nature Conservancy; thereafter, she transitioned to a similar role with the Virginia chapter from 1992 to 1998. Ms. Smart was a teacher at Middleburg VA Community Charter School for three years before assuming her current position with the Study Buddies tutoring program at Middleburg Elementary School. Designed to provide students with homework help and improve their math and reading skills, the initiative has received positive feedback since its inception.
Ms. Smart has also served as a director of The Land Trust of Virginia and the Piedmont Child Care Center, as well as a guide for the National Aquarium. A member of the Fairfax Hunt Club and the Upperville Garden Club, she has been included in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who of American Women.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to her profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Edith M. Smart has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
