With 20 years of industry experience, Dr. Hong has worked as a professor for the Division of Navigation Information System with Mokpo National Maritime University since 2014. Prior to this appointment, he worked as a researcher with the Faculty of Information Science and Electrical Engineering at Kyushu University from 2007 to 2012, as an assistant professor with Mokpo National Maritime University from 2005 to 2006, and as a desk officer for the Hyundai Merchant Marine Co., Ltd. from 1999 to 2003. Dr. Hong began his career as an intern for the Environment and Safety Department for the Hyundai Merchant Marine Co., Ltd. in 1997.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Hong pursued an education at Mokpo National Maritime University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Nautical Science in 1999. He followed this with a Master of Science in Maritime Information Control and Measurement in 2005 at Mokpo National Maritime University. Dr. Hong concluded his studies at Mokpo in 2014, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in Maritime Information Systems.
As a respected voice in the industry, Dr. Hong is affiliated with numerous professional organizations. Since 2016, he has served as director for the Korean Institute of Intelligent Systems and the International Association of e-Navigation and Ocean Economy. He is also a member of the Korean Society of Marine Environment and Safety and the Korea Marina Officers' Association. Dr. Hong has been appointed for several civic responsibilities, including a 2nd Class Deck Officer for Merchant Vessels, 3rd Class Radio Electronic Officer, Small Vessel Operator, Overland Radio Officer, and Boat Operator.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Hong has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his career. In 2000, he received a Model Employee Award from Hyundai Merchant Marine Co., Ltd. Most recently, he was presented with an Achievement Award and a Best Paper Award from the International Symposium on Advanced Intelligent Systems in 2015 and 2017, respectively. Looking towards the future, Dr. Hong hopes to continue sharing his expertise with the next generation of professionals in his vocation at Mokpo National Maritime University.
