Distinguished professor of epidemiology and infectious diseases at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), Dr. Detels' tenure included serving as chair of epidemiology on three occasions as well as dean of the school of public health for five years in the 1980s. His dedication to the field earned him a 2009 UCLA Academic Senate Committee on Teaching Distinguished Teaching Award, and a 2012 Academic Senate Faculty Research Leadership Award. Beginning his career at the university as an associate professor of epidemiology in 1971, Dr. Detels was a former medical officer and epidemiologist for the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke in Bethesda, MD, from 1969 to 1971. He began his research career at the Naval Medical Research Unit in Taipei in 1966 prior to joining the National Institutes of Health.
Some of Dr. Detels' most extensive research has been in relation to air pollution, multiple sclerosis and other neurologic diseases, hypertension, and several infectious diseases, including trachoma, capillariasis and Japanese encephalitis. In 1981, he began doing research on HIV/AIDS when he initiated a natural history study of AIDS in young homosexual men in Los Angeles. Two years later, he became the principal investigator of the Los Angeles Center for the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study, one of the largest natural history studies of HIV/AIDS in the world.
In 1988, Dr. Detels initiated the UCLA/Fogarty International Training Program in Epidemiology Related to HIV/AIDS with funding from the Fogarty International Center. The program has trained over 100 health professionals at the masters and doctoral level at UCLA from Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Myanmar, India, China, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Hungary, and Brazil.
Dr. Detels has authored a great number of articles in academic journals throughout his career, boasting over 500 in total with roughly 300 of them specific to the epidemiology, natural history, immunology, genetics, and biology of HIV-1 infection. Some of these have been included in The New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet,The Journal of Infectious Diseases, the American Journal of Public Health, The Journals of Gerontology, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment among others. He was a co-editor of the first and second editions of The Oxford Textbook of Public Health, senior editor for the third through sixth editions, the last of which has been retitled The Oxford Textbook of Global Public Health, and senior editor of Public Health in East and Southeast Asia.
A guest lecturer at a number of universities, conferences, and medical organizations since 1969, Dr. Detels has also served in a number of capacities for the Ministries of Health in China, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore and Myanmar, as well as the American Foundation of AIDS Research, and the Global Program on AIDS. Furthermore, he is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American College for Preventive Medicine, the American College of Epidemiology, and the Faculty of Public Health of the Royal College of Physicians of the UK.
Dr. Detels remains active on numerous other professional organizations as a member of the Society of Epidemiological Research, the Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine, the American Public Health Association, and the American Association of Cancer Education. He served as president of the International Epidemiological Association where he served in various roles, including the position of president and as president of the Society for Epidemiologic Research. He has also received numerous research grants throughout his career.
Dr. Detels was the 2011 Cruickshank Lecture for the Epidemiological Association, received a 2008 Abraham Lilienfeld Award for Excellence in Epidemiology by the American College of Epidemiology, and a 2007 Sahametry Award granted by Hun Sen, the president of Cambodia. He has also received numerous other awards from the governments of Vietnam, Thailand and China. In 2016 he was named a Friend of China, China's highest award for a foreigner, by the Premier of China, Li Ke Giang. He has been highlighted in dozens of editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the West over the past 30 years.
