Dr. Barnett Zumoff has had a distinguished clinical and research career in medicine, and has also had two parallel sub-careers: in Jewish cultural and organizational affairs, and in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.

After graduating from Columbia University in 1945 and from Long Island College of Medicine in 1949, and doing post-graduate work at Brooklyn Jewish Hospital, Massachusetts Memorial Hospital, Brooklyn VA Hospital, and Kings County Hospital, Dr. Zumoff obtained a research position at Sloan-Kettering Institute in 1957, where he began a 24-year association with the distinguished endocrine researchers Leon Hellman, Thomas Gallagher, David Fukushima, Leon Bradlow, Robert Rosenfeld and Jack Fishman. Dr. Zumoff became a world-class expert on steroid metabolism and its relation to thyroid disease, and he published several classic papers in that field. While at SKI, he was Instructor in Medicine at Cornell University Medical College and Visiting Physician at Rockefeller University Hospital, and became Board-certified in Endocrinology and Metabolism.

In 1961, Dr. Zumoff and the rest of the SKI group moved to Montefiore Medical Center, which had built an entire 5-story building as an Institute for Steroid Research to accommodate their research. Dr. Zumoff became Senior Investigator in that Institute and also Director of an 18-bed Clinical Research Center, where he continued to conduct important human medical research on steroid metabolism, thyroid disease, breast cancer, obesity, and coronary disease. He was also awarded the rank of Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, which was associated with Montefiore.

In 1981, the operations of the research group terminated, and Dr. Zumoff moved to Beth Israel Medical Center, where he became Chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism and was appointed Professor of Medicine at Mt Sinai School of Medicine, a rank he still holds. At Beth Israel, he ran the clinical operations of the Endocrinology Division and continued to do clinical research and publish papers in that field. He retired as Division Chief in 2000, but retained the title of Emeritus Chief (which he still holds) and continued to practice and do research in his fields of expertise. He is a world-renowned expert in those fields and has published about 250 papers to date, and he has been on the Editorial Boards of The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Anticancer Research, and Breast Cancer-An International Journal. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, and is also a member of the Endocrine Society, the American Medical Association, the New York Diabetes Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Society of U.S. Air Force Flight Surgeons.

In one of Dr. Zumoff's parallel sub-careers, he has been President of the Workmen's Circle (four 2-year terms), the largest Yiddish cultural and progressive Jewish organizations in the world; President of the Forward Association (14 years), which published the Jewish Forward, the world's oldest, largest, and most influential Jewish newspaper, Vice-President (currently) of the Folksbiene, the oldest and largest Yiddish theater organization in the world; President (currently) of the Congress for Jewish Culture, a consolidated group of organizations in the field of Jewish culture an, and a member (currently) of the Atran Foundation, one of the largest charitable foundations for Jewish causes. He is also the most prolific living translator of Yiddish literature to English, having published 35 volumes of prose and poetry to date (with three more in preparation). He has also published one volume of original poetry in English.

Dr. Zumoff's military sub-career began when he was drafted in 1951 (pursuant to a law passed during the Korean War to draft all physicians and dentists). He was commissioned a First-Lieutenant in the Medical Corps. of the U.S. Air Force, became a Flight Surgeon, and remained on active duty for two years. He then transferred to the Air Force Reserve, in which he remained active until he retired in 1982. In the Reserve, he was, at various times, the Wing Flight Surgeon of a transport wing, the Commander of a medical squadron in that wing, and the Commander of a free-standing medical squadron. In 1974, he was appointed Reserve Deputy to the Air Force Surgeon General and was promoted that year to Brigadier General, a rank that he retains in retirement. During his Air Force career, he was awarded the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Combat Readiness Medal, the Commendation Medal, and the Expert Marksmanship Medal.

Dr. Zumoff was married to the late Selma Silver from 1951 to 2015. They have three daughters: Janine Katomski, Francine Zumoff and Linda Zumoff, four granddaughters: Cindy Lynn Cammarata, Michelle LaGrou, Uta Briggs and Kaydia Briggs and, one great-granddaughter: Avalynn LaGrou. He has been listed in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in World Jewry. He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society.
