A longtime educator, Dr. Nyenhuis was born in Mille Lacs County, MN, in 1935. He studied extensively across the United States, first earning a Bachelor of Arts in Greek at Calvin College in Michigan in 1956. Dr. Nyenhuis then continued his studies at Stanford University in California with an MA in Classics in 1961, followed by a PhD in Classics in 1963. He was later recognized with an honorary Doctor of Letters from Hope College in Michigan in 2001.
Nyenhuis interrupted his graduate work in 1957 to return to teach Greek and Latin for two years at his alma mater. While completing his doctoral dissertation, he served as acting instructor at Stanford in 1962. The next 13 years were spent serving in professor, director and chairman positions at Wayne State University and as a visiting professor at two other universities, and as a visiting research professor at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, Greece in 1973-74. In 1975, Dr. Nyenhuis began working at Hope College as a professor of classics and dean for the humanities; he later served as dean for arts and humanities and, for seventeen years, as provost. Upon his retirement in 2001, he was awarded a Doctor of Letters degree by Hope College and was named provost and professor emeritus. He then joined the school's A.C. Van Raalte Institute as a Senior Research Fellow. A year later he became the institute's director, and serves in that role to this day.
Dr. Nyenhuis has authored works such as "Myth and the Creative Process: Michael Ayrton and the Myth of Daedalus, the Maze Maker" and "Centennial History of 14th Street Christian Reformed Church, Holland, Michigan," and co-authored the best-selling "Latin Via Ovid: A First Course." He served as an editor for "A Goodly Heritage: Essays in Honor of the Reverend Dr. Elton J. Bruins at Eighty" and "Across Borders: Dutch Migration to North America and Australia." Other creative works included numerous articles and reviews in professional journals, co-authored and co-edited books on both local and Dutch American history, and service on editorial boards.
Dr. Nyenhuis' work has earned him several accolades over the span of his career, including the Distinguished Service Award from the Michigan Humanities Council in 1984, the Meritorious Service Award from Hope College's Alumni Association in 2001, and the West Michigan Dutch American Leadership Lifetime Service Award from the Dutch American Heritage Day Committee in 2017. Dr. Nyenhuis holds emeritus membership in the Managing Committee of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. He has served as a member of the board of directors for a variety of organizations from 1979 to 1999, including the Michigan Humanities Council, the Great Lakes Colleges Association, and the National Federation of State Humanities Councils. Dr. Nyenhuis has earned the position of chairman for the regional committee of the Danforth Associates from 1975 to 1977, the board of directors of the Michigan Humanities Council from 1980 to 1982, and the board of directors of the National Federation of State Humanities Councils from 1981 to 1983. Dr. Nyenhuis has been featured in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in the World.
Dr. Nyenhuis is married to Leona M. Nyenhuis, with whom he has four children, Karen J. Louwsma, Kathy J. Kurtze, Lorna J. Cook, and Sarah Van Duyn Nyenhuis. He is also the grandfather to nine children, Aubrey, Allison, Jenny, Arthur George IV, Emily, Simon, Justis, Salem, and Oliver. Dr. Nyenhuis' hobbies include photography and carpentry.
