Historian and professor emeritus at Nebraska Wesleyan University since 2004, Dr. Naugle spent his entire career teaching generations of students. His passion for history and academia was obvious throughout his tenure, and he was a well-known figure on campus among students and colleagues alike. Beginning his journey at the university as an instructor of history in 1966, he then became an assistant, associate, and finally full professor by 1985, serving as a Huge-Kinne professor of history for 19 years. The history department chairman from 1980 to 2001, and graduate program chairman from 2002 to 2005, Dr. Naugle also served as director of the Wesleyan Honors Academy from 2001 to 2003, and as director of the history studies graduate program from 2004 to 2006.
Dr. Naugle's zest for all things history spilled outside of the classroom as well. For 15 years, he was director of the Nebraska Summer Institute for High School History and Social Studies Teachers. He was also a representative of the Mountain-Plains States Coordinators, Executive Committee of State Coordinators of the National History Day Program for nearly a decade, was co-coordinator of the "We the People" program for high school history and social studies students in Nebraska from 1990 to 2003, and served in various roles for the Nebraska Foundation for the Preservation of Oral History. He currently serves as the chairman of the Nebraska Hall of Fame Commission from 1999 to 2006, was the director of the Honors Academy Dual Credit for Nebraska Wesleyan University since 2006, is an associate fellow for the Center for Great Plains Studies and the International Quilt Study Center, lifetime member of the Nebraska Historical Society, and lifetime member of Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Alpha Theta International History Honor Society.
In 1986, Dr. Naugle co-wrote the film "White Man's Way," which won a Clarion Award in 1987. He also co-wrote the film "In the White Man's Image" in 1992. The author of several books, including "Nebraska Quilts and Quiltmakers" in 1991, which was re-released in 2003, and won a Frost Award from the Smithsonian Institute in 1993, and "History of Nebraska" in 1997, he also served as editor of several other books with other authors.
The extent of Dr. Naugle's involvement in both career and community have earned him several recognition awards, including a Paul Beck Social Studies Teacher of the Year Award by the Nebraska State Council in 2003, a Nebraska Sower Award by the Nebraska Humanities Council in 2003, and an Addison E. Sheldon Award by the Nebraska Historical Society in 1998. In 2015, Dr. Naugle was honored with a History of Nebraska, Fourth Edition, by the Nebraska Center for the Book.
Born in Mitchell, IN, Dr. Naugle later married Gretchen Rohn in 1963, and had a daughter. He holds a BA in American Government and Politics and an MA in American History from Purdue University, and a PhD in American Studies from the University of Kansas. Enjoying both carpentry and cooking in his free time, he has been highlighted in Who's Who in America several times for his tireless dedication.
