A recreational therapist at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren, OH, for the past nearly 30 years, Ms. VanAuker addresses the individual needs of patients and their illnesses and/or disabilities by utilizing recreation and other activity-based interventions as a means to promote psychological and physical health, recovery, and overall well-being. Particularly fond of working with the elderly, one of her biggest successes was when she produced a video, "Exercise is the Fountain of Youth" in 1993, which was later sold to 1,000 facilities across the country. The video was not only based on physical education but also positive thinking.
In 2005, Ms. VanAuker established Lana's Dance Studio as owner and dance instructor. Well-known for her for her choreography and photography expertise, Ms. VanAuker has received several awards, including a Ballroom Dance Gold Medal from the Senior Olympics in 2006, and an Excellence Award from the Resident Activity Association in 2008. Notably, she formerly served as a teacher for the Salem City School in Ohio, health educator at the Park Vista Retirement Center in Youngstown, OH, exercise technician at Youngstown State University, program director at the YWCA of Youngstown, and physical education instructor at St. Joseph School in Campbell, OH, from 1973 to 1988.
A nationally certified activity consultant and certified teacher in Ohio, Ms. VanAuker has a BS in Education, cum laude, from Kent State University and an MS in Education from Youngstown University. Maintaining membership with the Alliance for Health, the U.S. Amateur Ballroom Dance Association, the Pennsylvania Activity Professional Association, and the Resident Activity Professional Association, she spent several years as an activity consultant for the Mahoning/Trumbull Nursing Homes and served on the advisory board for the Ohio State Executive Physical Fitness Department of Health. Ms. VanAuker served on the board of directors for USA Dance. She is also a longtime volunteer with the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association. She is a member of the Warren Senior Production Company and performs hula, ballroom and multicultural dances with her granddaughter Leanna. She is a presenter at occupational therapy and recreational therapy conventions.
The proud mother of one daughter, Ms. VanAuker enjoys doing photography, dance, aerobics, volleyball, and travel. She has been included in dozens of editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who's Who of American Women.
