Dr. Priest is a medical geneticist and professor emeritus in the departments of pediatrics-medical genetics, and pathology at Emory University who made a significant impact in her particular area of study. For five decades, she dedicated her time to medicine, education and research, and was later rewarded with an Emeritus College Award from Emory University in 2010, and a Distinguished Cytogenetics Award from the American Cytogenetics Conference. She also received numerous fellowships from the National Foundation and the Chicago Heart Association, as well as grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Veteran's Association and the Deutscher Academischer Austauschdienst for her research.
Earning her undergraduate degree and MD at the University of Chicago in the early 1950s, Dr. Priest then became a rotating intern at the University of Washington's King County Hospital System in Seattle, WA, before completing her residency at the University of Chicago Clinics. Becoming a staff physician in the respiratory center at Columbus Hospital in Chicago in 1957, staff pediatrician at Rainier School in Buckley, WA, in 1958, and director of the birth defects clinic at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver, CO, in 1964, she accepted the role of director of the prenatal diagnosis program at Emory University in 1973. Dr. Priest remained at the school until 1991, during which time she also taught as an associate professor of pediatrics, assistant professor of pathology, and professor of pediatrics and medical genetics.
Some of Dr. Priest's major research has included work with chromosome thymidine uptake in synchronized cultures, synthesis period in FudR synchronized cells, dermatoglyphics and clinical disease, replication kinetics of abnormal human X chromosomes, chorionic villus studies in early pregnancy, and the effect of hypomethylation on cell cycle. She also conducted co-research in antenatal diagnosis of inherited amino acid disorders, differentiation in amniotic fluid cells, growth factor and cytogenetic abnormalities in malignant melanoma, and endocrine function of human amniotic fluid cells. Dr. Priest's work has been documented in many refereed journal articles and she has also authored and co-authored many abstracts. In addition, she has authored books, book reviews, and chapters to books over the years.
From 2000 to 2001, Dr. Priest taught for the Faculdade de Medicina de Marilia in Brazil. She was also a visiting professor at the University of Wurzburg in Germany and the University of Auckland in New Zealand, visiting staff member in the department of zoology at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and clinical instructor in the department of pediatrics at the University of Illinois. A longtime member of the American Society of Cell Biology, the Tissue Culture Association, and the Association of Genetic Technologists, Dr. Priest also chaired the cytogenetics committee for the Mountain States Regional Genetic Services Network, was on the board of directors for the Atlanta Genetics Society, chaired the social issue committee for the American Society of Human Genetics, and was vice president of the American Dermatoglyphics Society. She also contributed her time to serving on the editorial board of the American Journal of Medical Genetics for several years, was a scientific consultant with the Food and Drug Administration, and was a site visitor for the National Cancer Institute and the National Foundation of the March of Dimes.
Married to Robert Eugene Priest since 1958, with three children and four grandchildren, Dr. Priest enjoys gardening and sketching. She is also an avid cat lover and owner. Notably, she has been cited in Who's Who in Science and Engineering for her work.
