Program Director of Neuro-oncology at the Nationwide Children's Hospital in the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and BMT in Columbus, OH, since 2014, and tenured Professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University, Dr. Finlay is an internationally recognized expert in pediatric brain tumors. He is the former Director of the Neural Tumors Program at the Children's Hospital Los Angeles and former Professor of Pediatrics, Neurology, and Neurological Surgery at the University of Southern California's (USC) Keck School of Medicine of 11 years. During his time at the Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Dr. Finlay served as the Audrey and Billy Wilder endowed Chair in Neuro-oncology and was the Clinical Director of the Autologous Blood and Marrow Transplantation Program in the Children's Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases. From 2006 to 2014, he simultaneously consulted as a neuro-oncologist in the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Division at the Children's Hospital of Oakland. Prior to teaching at USC, he held faculty positions in pediatric oncology at Stanford University, the University of Wisconsin at Madison, the University of Pennsylvania, Cornell University/Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and New York University.
Born in Manchester, England, Dr. Finlay earned a B.Sc. in Biochemistry with honors in 1970, and an MB, ChB, at the University of Birmingham in 1973, followed by two internships, residency work at the Birmingham Children's Hospital and Maternity Hospital and The Christie Hospital and Holt Radium Institute, and fellowships at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Throughout his career, Dr. Finlay has conducted significant research and has been recognized for developing therapeutic strategies for patients with malignant brain tumors. He has been contributing articles in peer reviewed publications on therapy of childhood brain tumors since 1987, and has served on the editorial board for various journals throughout his career and currently includes "Neuro-oncology", "Pediatric Neurology" and "Pediatric Blood and Cancer." Dr. Finlay was also an ad hoc reviewer for numerous journals from 1983 to 2017, has been a reviewer on numerous occasions, and has contributed abstracts and book chapters in the field. Furthermore, he has served on various medical advisory boards and medical foundations and has been a speaker at numerous pediatric cancer charity events.
Currently licensed to practice medicine in both Ohio and California, Dr. Finlay was previously licensed in Ireland, New York, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and the United Kingdom. He is a longtime member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the International Society of Pediatric Hematology Oncology, the American Society of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, the International Society of Experimental Hematology, and the American Association of Cancer Research. He recently became a member of the European Association of Neuro-Oncology in 2017, the Central Ohio Pediatric Society in 2015, and the British Neuro-Oncology Society in 2015.
Named to America's Top Doctors for Cancer by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. in 2017, and to numerous other professional publications throughout the course of his career, Dr. Finlay has also earned countless other awards for his success in medicine. More recently, he received an International Pediatric Oncology Recognition Award from the Society for Neuro-Oncology of Latin America in 2016, an Outstanding Clinical-Translational Investigator Award from the Division of Hematology, Oncology and BMT at Nationwide Children's Hospital in 2016, and a Samuel Gross Memorial Lectureship from the University of Florida in 2016. Named to Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World, Dr. Finlay is married to Adriana Maria Finlay and has one daughter. In his free time, he rows competitively with the Greater Columbus Rowing Club. He also loves to cook.
