With more than 40 years of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Gopalsami currently works part-time as an Argonne Associate (senior scientist) at the US Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory. Prior to this appointment, he served Argonne National Laboratory in multiple positions, including senior electrical engineer from 2004 to 2014, electrical engineer from 1984 to 2003, and assistant electrical engineer from 1980 to 1984. Additionally, Dr. Gopalsami has held the roles of adjunct lecturer with the Department of Electrical Engineering at Northern Illinois University in 1988 and both a research assistant and teaching assistant at the University of Illinois at Chicago from 1976 to 1979.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Gopalsami pursued an education at the University of Madras, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1970. He followed this opportunity with a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, which he received from the University of Madras in 1973. Dr. Gopalsami concluded his studies in 1981, graduating from the University of Illinois at Chicago with a PhD in Electrical Engineering.
Within his field, Dr. Gopalsami has contributed over 46 peer-reviewed articles to professional journals, over 100 conference papers and reports, and dozens of invited talks. He is a prolific inventor with 13 US patents to his credit. Based on his contributions to millimeter-wave spectroscopy, imaging, and reflectometry, Dr. Gopalsami was elevated to the grade of Fellow of IEEE in 2015, with which he previously served as a co-chair of their Chicago Conference. He is also a noted member of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society, The American Society for Nondestructive Testing, and SPIE, the International Society for Optics and Photonics.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Gopalsami has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. The most notable are his two R&D 100 Awards (often called the 'Oscars of Invention') by the Research and Development Magazine for Millimeter-Wave Fabric Inspection System in 1996 and for Passive Millimeter-Wave Spectrometer for Remote Chemical Detection in 2007; the Outstanding Mentor Award from the Office of Science Undergraduate Research Programs of the U.S. Department of Energy in 2006; and the Best Paper Award from the American Society of Nondestructive Testing in 1994. Previously, he received the Argonne Pacesetter Award at the Argonne National Laboratory in 1997 and Honorable Mention for Nonintrusive Sensor for Hostile Environments at the Federal Laboratory Consortium Technology Transfer in 2004. He has been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
Having been raised on a farm, Dr. Gopalsami credits his science teacher, Mr. M. M. Ramasamy, as his inspiration for entering college, his PhD thesis adviser, late Professor C. K. Sanathanan for helping him come to the U.S., his mentor and friend, Dr. Apostolos (Paul) Raptis for enabling a distinguished career at Argonne, and his wife, Dr. Chellam (Chitra) Gopalsami for being a constant source of encouragement.
