General Kroesen is a retired US Army officer who enlisted in the Army Reserve in August, 1942, was called to active duty in March, 1943 with all members of the Rutgers University ROTC contingent. After two years of enlisted service he graduated from the Infantry Officer Candidate School as a 2d L:ieutenant and served principally as a commander, first of Company E, 254th Infantry, 63d Infantry Division in World War II, of the 1st Battalion, 187th Airborne Infantry in Korea, the 196th Infantry Brigade and the 23d Infantry (Americal) Division in Vietnam. He then commanded the 82d Airborne Division in the US, the VII US Corps in Germany. He was then promoted to 4-stars before commanding Army Forces Command in the US and finally as Commander-in Chief, US Army, Europe and commander of the NATO Central Army Group in Heidelberg, Germany.
He served also in various staff positions as an intelligence officer, a logistician, a faculty member at the Army War College and a force development officer in the Pentagon. His final staff assignment was as the Vice Chief of the US Army. He retired from the Army in April, 1983 after almost 41 years of service,15 of which were served overseas in France, Germany(3 tours) Korea, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam (2 tours).
Gen Kroesen is a decorated veteran who received three awards of the Combat Infantryman Badge, both the Defense and Army Distinguished Service Medals, two Silver Stars, three Bronze Stars and three Purple Hearts along with multiple meritorious service medals. He is a recipient of the French Legion of Honor, the German Verdienstkreuz and multiple Korean and Vietnam awards for his wartime service.
He was awarded a BS in Agriculture by Rutgers University, a BA and MA degrees in International Affairs by George Washington University and an honorary LHD from Rutgers.
Since retirement from the Army he has been a self-employed consultant in national and international military affairs, has served on Boards of Directors for three corporations, the American Security Council Foundation and the Army Historical Foundation. He was President of the Army War College Alumni Association and a contributing editor of ARMY, a publication of the Association of the US Army Institute of Land Warfare. He is a Son of the American Revolution (SAR). He has been awarded the Sylvanus Thayer award by the West Point Association of Graduates, the Audie Murphy Award by the American Veterans Center, the Infantry Center's Doughboy Award and the Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame, the State of New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal and is a Rutgers Distinguished Graduate along with the dedication of the ROTC building named in his honor. He has also been named an Honorary Sergeant Major of the US Army.
Corporal Kroesen married Rowene Wilder McCray in 1944 and together they are proud of three children, ten grandchildren and twelve and still counting great grands, among whom are three who served and are serving in the Army, two veterans of Korea and Afghanistan and one still serving Army medical doctor. Notably Gen Kroesen has been included in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1987 and was cited in the student version of Who's Who in America in 1989.
