Dr. Mazer sequentially became a most successful practicing and teaching Internist, Nephrologist, and Cardiologist from 1962-1997 interrupted by volunteering for the Vietnam War with active duty as a physician from 1965-1967 and subsequently the next ten years in the Ready Reserves ultimately becoming a LCDR, US Navy, retired.
During his 35-year tenure as a physician, he demonstrated the multifaceted skill with his expertise in those different specialties of medicine. He became Chief of Cardiology and Chief of Nephrology at two greater Boston teaching hospitals, the Goddard Memorial in Stoughton and the Cardinal Cushing (now the Good Samaritan Medical Center) in Brockton as well as a consultant at the Brockton Hospital. At those hospitals, he became the director of the coronary unit, and medical director of the intensive and special care units. He also initiated and ran the echocardiography, non-invasive vascular and Holter monitoring labs at both facilities. Dr. Mazer became the director of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Center at the Striar Jewish Community Center in Stoughton. He was the cardiac director of cardiac ultrasonography, trans-telephonic pacemaker surveillance and Holter monitoring for one of the country's largest mobile companies, National Medical, which was ultimately bought by Fresenius Medical Company.
As a non-invasive cardiologist, he specializes in coronary heart disease with their complications of heart attacks, congestive heart failure as well as valvular heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, pacemaker surveillance, hyper-cholesterolemia, hypertension, etc. As a nephrologist, he specialized in treating diseases of the kidney including in-hospital acute hemodialysis (including poisonous ingestions) for acute medical and surgical disasters culminating in acute kidney failure requiring urgent treatment, and dealt with metabolic, acid-base and electrolyte problems. He also covered other physicians for outpatient chronic dialysis units. Additionally, Dr. Mazer operated a very successful private practice entitled Bridgewater, Goddard, Park Medical Associates from 1968-1998. He was an assistant professor of medicine at Boston University Medical School and an instructor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.
When asked of his achievements in his career, Dr. Mazer states "to have had the honor and privilege with his insatiable desire to be there for others who are in need of medical care and help. There can be no greater achievement in life". Other achievements in his medical career include his development of the first acute hemodialysis on the south shore of Massachusetts, his team's discovery and the first documentation of a Left Ventricular Myxoma by ultrasonography in 1982 subsequently published in the American Heart Journal, Vol 104, No.4, pp.875-877, Oct 1982. He wrote the forward of the textbook Principles of Interpretation in Echocardiography, by Pamela Harrigan and Richard Lee, 1985, and was a guest editor of the "Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography". In recognition of his professional excellence, Dr. Mazer has been the recipient of a number of accolades within his professional community.
Before establishing himself professionally, Dr. Mazer earned a B.S. with honors from Boston University in 1958, followed by an M.D. from the University of Cincinnati in 1962, being the recipient of an AOA (Alpha Omega Alpha) award. While at the University of Cincinnati, he was a Junior National Institute of Health Fellow in gastroenterology-hepatology diseases under Dr. Leon Schiff. Also, while at Cincinnati Medical School, he volunteered to take the experimental polio vaccine developed by Dr. Albert Sabin and to attend and care for highly infectious patients who could not be admitted to the hospital and needed to be isolated into a separate temporary facility outside the hospital environment. He was an intern and resident at the Boston City Hospital on the Tufts medical service. Thereafter, he was a Fellow of Renal and Metabolic studies at Boston University Medical Center under Doctors Arnold Relman and Norman Levinsky. After returning from active service in 1967-68 he became a Fellow of Cardiovascular disease at West Roxbury VA Hospital, a teaching hospital for Harvard Medical School run by Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital under the tutelage of Dr. David Littman and Dr. Eugene Braunwald including rotations through the Massachusetts General Hospital and Boston Children's Hospital.
Dr. Mazer is board certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Board Certified in Nephrology from the American Board of Nephrology and Board certified in Cardiology by the American Board of Cardiology.
Outside of his work as a physician, Dr. Mazer is renowned for his classical realistic art work which began at age four. However, from the very beginning he knew he had to be a physician to help others, especially seeing all the death, injuries and suffering growing up in WWII. Nevertheless, even as an extremely busy physician, he continued to very actively pursue art as another passion, becoming a two- term President of the New England Watercolor Society, while also running an educational program with guest artists from New England and across the country in Canton, Mass which would have artists from surrounding areas in attendance. Notably, he holds elected or signature memberships in 37 national art societies as well as many regional organizations. In 2017, Dr. Mazer was unanimously approved by the National Board of Directors of the American Artists Professional League (AAPL) in New York City, as the first Signature Member elected in many decades, and the eighth signature member in the AAPL's 89-year history; there are presently over 600 members in the organization and a total of only 13 signature members in its 89 year existence. He previously held the title of Fellow, Magna Cum Laude with the association.
He is a designated Coast Guard artist, and has seven of his paintings in the permanent collection of the USCG in Washington, D.C. He has exhibited over 700 of his watercolor and oil paintings in juried shows across the country and internationally. Notably, Dr. Mazer had two of his works from a private collection chosen by the curator of the Zeeland Maritime MuZEEum in Vlissingen, Holland in 2009 for an international exhibition in celebration of the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's European founding of New York (New Amsterdam). Dr. Mazer's work is in the collection of, or has been exhibited in, 50 Museums across the country as well as being in many private and public collections. His work is published in Splash 9: Watercolor Secrets, (2006), Splash 10: Passionate Brushstrokes, (2008), both published by North Light Books; The Artistic Touch 4, (2010), The Artistic Touch 5, (2012), and The Artistic Touch 6, (2014), published by Creative Arts Press representing 120 of the best artists in America. Dr. Mazer gave consent for his image of "The Whaleman Statue" to be on the cover of "A Bold and Hardy Race of Men: The Lives and Literature of American Whalemen", by Jennifer Schell, published by University of Mass Press. He has a number of his paintings in the collection of the New Bedford Whaling Museum itself.
