With more than 45 years of professional experience, Mr. Ellis has been of counsel with Sommerman McCaffity & Quesada since 2016, having been with its predecessor firm, Sommerman & Quesada from 2003 to 2016. His areas of expertise include personal injury, products liability, and medical malpractice, as well as mediation. Prior to obtaining these roles, he was of counsel with Howie & Sweeney from 1996 to 2003, and in private practice from 1981 to 1996. Earlier in his career, he worked with Woodruff, Kendall & Smith from 1972 to 1980, first as an associate and later as a partner.
Mr. Ellis began his career as a student at the University of Texas at Arlington, obtaining a BA in History with honors in 1965. He then served in the U.S. Army Airborne Infantry from 1965 to 1969, attaining the rank of captain. He is a Vietnam Veteran. He went on to earn a JD from the Southern Methodist University School of Law in 1971, where he also worked as the editor of the Journal of Air Law and Commerce and was student chief counsel for the legal clinic. He is admitted to practice in the state of Texas, for the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern, Northern, Southern, and Western Districts of Texas, as well as before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court. Additionally, he is board certified in personal injury and civil trial law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and in civil trial law by the National Board of Trial Advocacy.
As a highly respected expert in the field, Mr. Ellis has held leadership positions with numerous professional and community organizations. He is a member and former board member of the Texas Trial Lawyers Association, the State Bar of Texas, Legal Services of North Texas, Dallas Legal Hospice, and the Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity. In addition, he has served as president of the following: Law Focused Education, Inc., the Dallas Bar Association, the Dallas Trial Lawyers Association, the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers, the Dallas Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates, the Dallas Council on Alcoholism, and the Dallas All Sports Association. A former chair of the Texas Center for Legal Ethics and Professionalism, he is also a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum, the College of State Bar of Texas, the William "Mac" Taylor Inn of Court, the Salesmanship Club of Dallas, and the International Academy of Trial Lawyers.
Mr. Ellis has been recognized throughout his career for his contributions to the legal industry and the community. From 2002 to 2017, he was named one of the Best Lawyers in America, and Lawdragon called him one of the Nation's Leading Plaintiffs Lawyers in 2007. He was the recipient of the Jim D. Bowmer Professionalism Award from the College State Bar of Texas in 2010, the Leon Jaworski Teaching Excellence in Law Award in 2002, the Nancy Garms Memorial Award for Outstanding Contributions to Law in 1996, and the Distinguished Service Award from the Dallas All Sports Association. He also received the Morris Harrell Professionalism Award and the Martin Luther King Junior Justice Award from the Dallas Bar Association, the Justinian Award, the Dallas Habitat for Humanity Mary Brock Award, the UT Arlington Military Science Hall of Honor, and the UT Arlington Distinguished Alumni Award.
In 1983, he was recognized by Gov. Mark White with the Certificate of Appreciation for Exceptional and Distinguished Volunteer Service, and the Dallas Association of Legal Secretaries named him Boss of the Year in 1978. In 1977, the Jaycees recognized him as one of the Outstanding Young Men of America, having given him the Hayward McMurray Award in 1975 and 1976. All Sports Association gave him a Special Recognition in 1977, the Dallas Independent School District recognized him from 1971 to 1983, and the Southern Methodist University Law School presented him with the Wall Street Journal Award in 1972.
