With more than 50 years of professional experience, Dr. De Wrachien has been a hydrologist and full professor at the State University of Milan since 1986, also serving as director of the Agricultural Hydraulics Department from 2000 to 2006, director of the Computer Centre of the faculty of Agriculture from 1992 to 1995, and as visiting professor at the Wessex Institute of Technology from 2008 to 2010. Prior to obtaining these positions, he was an associate professor of irrigation and drainage from 1983 to 1986, a lecturer from 1970 to 1983, having begun with the university in 1967.
Earning his undergraduate degree in Geology in 1964 and PhD in Advanced Applied Geology at the State University of Milan, Dr. De Wrachien has been a member of CIRG (International Commission of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering), where he has served as a member of the Executive Board from 2004 to 2014. He also served as President of EurAgEng (European Society of Agricultural Engineers) from 2002 to 2004 and as chairman of the EurAgEng special interest group on soil and water from 1994 to 2004, and as a member of ICID (International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage) where he serves as associate editor of the official Journal of Irrigation and Drainage since 2011.
An expert in the field, Dr. De Wrachien is affiliated with other professional organizations, including FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) as a lecturer and WIT (Wessex Institute of Technology) as a member of the board of directors since 2011, where he has conducted numerous international conferences, congresses, seminars, symposia, and workshops in the areas of agriculture engineering, irrigation and drainage and energy efficiency. He has served on the editorial boards for a number of professional journals, including the Journal of Agricultural Sciences as editor-in-chief since 2010, American Journal of Experimental Agriculture as editor-in-chief since 2012, and the Journal of Experimental Agriculture International as editor-in-chief since 2015. He is also the author of over 150 scientific publications such as key-note lectures, books and technical reports.
Throughout his career, Dr. De Wrachien has been recognized for his contributions in the fields of water resources management, irrigation and drainage technology, classical and quantum water droplet trajectories in an irrigation spray, modeling and fluid-dynamics of debris and hyper-concentrated flows, flood control, and irrigation measures and environmental impact of climate change. In 2006, he was honored with a Recognition of Services Award from the EuAgEng and with a Proclamation of a Great Mind of the 21st Century due to Significant Accomplishments Within Irrigation and Drainage from ABI (American Biographical Institute). That same year, he also received an Award for Truthful Support and Help in Organizing and Improving Scientific Level of the Symposia from the Croatian Agricultural Engineering Society. In 2008, he was the recipient of The Eminent Scientist Medal in Recognition of His Outstanding Contribution to Engineering Science from WIT and an Award for Excellence in Performance Impressive Achievements and Outstanding Contribution to the ICID Journal Irrigation and Drainage, and he has been cited in numerous editions of Who's Who in the World. Recently celebrating 50 years of marriage to his wife, Dr. De Wrachien has two children.
