With more than 60 years of professional experience, Dr. Hairston retired as a principal and teacher with the Baltimore City Department of Education in 1997. Prior to obtaining these positions, he served with the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of colonel and holding the positions of vice chair of the board of directors for Progressive Horizons, a member of the functional area assessment team of the U.S. Army Transportation Corps, a chief evaluator and director of the Command and General Staff College, and commandant of the 2071st U.S. Army School. Early in his career, he worked as a hand trucker with the Norfolk and Western Railroad.
Dr. Hairston began his career as a student at the Non Commissioned Officers Leadership School in 1948, going on to graduate from the Air Transportability School in 1950. He completed Transportation Officers Basic Courses in 1957, 1962, 1965, and 1966, and obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Morgan State University in 1959. In 1967, he completed the Transportation Officers Career Course with the Armed Forces Staff College, and he completed a Military Storage and Packaging Course in 1969. He joined Loyola College for a Master of Education in 1970, and he graduated from the United States Army Command and General Staff College in 1974 and the National Defense University in 1979. He earned a Doctorate of Education from Morgan State University in 2014. He has also completed a Defense Advanced Traffic Management Course, as well as training courses at Fort Indiantown Gap, PA.
A respected voice in the industry, Dr. Hairston has authored several works, including "No Excuses," and he has been recognized for his contributions throughout his career. He was the recipient of an Honorary Recognition Certificate and a Superior Recognition Certificate from the U.S. Postal Service, and he received a Combat Infantry Badge from the U.S. Army. He was recognized as an honor graduate of Morgan State University. An inductee to the Atkins High School Hall of Fame, and an inductee to the National Thespian Honor Society, Dr. Hairston feels his most successful accomplishment has been his involvement and impact on those who share his background as a veteran, and he has served as the commander of Post 301 of the American Legion.
