Mr. Brainerd spent the last few years of his career as a consultant, both on his own and for CPS-HR in Washington, DC, until 2014. His background in human resources recently included serving as the director of HR for the American Red Cross in St. Paul, MN, through 2005. He was also the director for the Metropolitan Council in St. Paul from 1997 to 2004, director of personnel for Ramsey County in St. Paul from 1985 to 1997, deputy commissioner personnel for the Minnesota Department of Employee Relations in St. Paul from 1980 to 1985, and director of personnel and assistant administrator for the Wisconsin Department of Justice in Madison from 1974 to 1980.
Besides his work in the field, Mr. Brainerd has been known for his expertise as a co-chair and member of the executive board for the Twin Cities Area Labor-Management Council in Minneapolis, roles he upheld for more than 20 years. He also taught as an instructor at the Carlson School of Management Employer Education at University of Minnesota from 1985 to 2003, and was a well-known speaker on human relations, expert witness of 30 years, and consultant for Qualified Neutral Alternate Dispute Resolution for nearly a decade.
Locally, Mr. Brainerd was involved in many aspects of his community. He was a coach for the Mahtomedi Youth Baseball Association, vice chair of the Madison Public Works, vice chair and member of the finance committee for the City of Mahtomedi, and board of directors of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Foundation. He continues his involvement in the community by serving as a member of the Mahtomedi City Council; Vice Chair, Century College Foundation; board member, Parks and Trails Council of Minnesota; and board member, Minnesota Region American Red Cross and Conservation Minnesota. He also maintains membership with several professional organizations such as the Public Employer Labor and Relations Association, the International Public Management Association for Human Resources, where he served as president and board of directors, was the recipient of a Stockberger Award, and was named an honorary lifetime member, and the St. Paul Human Resource Directors Association, where he served in various capacities.
A Bachelor of Science in business and economics graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Mr. Brainerd also completed the graduate leadership development program at the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, NC, in 1985. The proud father of four children, he enjoys skiing, hunting, bird watching, swimming and reading. Recognized for his leadership, he has been cited in dozens of editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World.
