Nyman with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished teacher at the junior high, high school and college levels, Ms. Nyman has since left the classroom to pursue her passion in the arts. Teaching for 35 years throughout the Boston area, she now enjoys painting, jewelry making and writing.
Ms. Nyman earned an undergraduate degree at Wheaton College in 1957, a Master of Arts in English literature at Boston University, and postgraduate work at Boston University. A certified teacher of secondary English and art in the state of Massachusetts, she first taught in the Malden Public Schools for two years and later taught for another 18 years with Wareham Public Schools until 1994. She also spent nearly 40 years in academia teaching English at Boston University, Fisher College, the University of Massachusetts and Quincy College from 1959 to 1997, and briefly served as an academic administrator on the Wareham campus at Quincy College.
In the early 1970s, Ms. Nyman co-founded and co-directed the Good Shepherd Nursery School. A former Wareham school committee member, who also served as vice chair, she was active with the Wareham Democratic Town Committee during the 1980s. More recently, she spent time as a trustee and foundation director for the Wareham Free Library. A former alumni director for the Boston University Cape Cod Alumni Association, Ms. Nyman remains a member of the National Education Association, the Massachusetts Teachers Association, the Massachusetts Retired Teachers Association and the New England Association of Teachers of English, and is a current board member of the Wareham Library Foundation.
During her career, Ms. Nyman authored "The Season's Edge and Other Poems" in 1984, followed by the textbook "Teaching with 50 Great Short Stories" in 1994. She authored a children's book, "Amos Goes to Smiling Hill Farm" in 1987, a young adult novel "When the Leaves Fall" in 2002, and "High School Stories: Short Takes from the Writer's Club" in 2010. She has been published in several literary magazines for her poems and articles as well.
The recipient of The Helen Myers Tate Award in 1955 and 1956, Mom's Choice Award in 2009, and Prize for Art Jewelry from the Bourne/Wareham Art Association in 2015, Ms. Nyman more recently taught as an instructor for the Plymouth Guild for the Arts offering a course in creating art jewelry, in 2017. Highlighted in the 22nd and 23rd editions of Who's Who of American Women, she is the proud parent of five children, grandmother of 12 grandchildren, and great-grandmother of two great-grandchildren. She continues to paint and write, and she participates in art shows and local craft fairs. Her paintings consist mostly of landscapes of her favorite areas in Maine, Cape Cod, Tuscany and Provence.
