Retired theater director and playwright, Mr. Foreman spent many years on Broadway and off Broadway authoring and directing over 50 plays during his tenure. A graduate of Brown University, where he received his undergraduate degree in 1959, and was later the recipient of an honorary doctorate, he then completed a Master of Fine Art at the prestigious Yale University School of Drama in 1962. During his time at Brown University, he was instrumental in the formation of the production workshop, the school's student theater group.
Renowned for his work in the avant-garde performance movement, Mr. Foreman's works has drawn on design, text, and the live performance of actors equally to create a different focus and relationship between the stage and the audience. Describing his work as "total theater," he was very much influenced by the work of filmmaker and performer Jack Smith. Throughout his career, Mr. Foreman has hosted plays in both New York City and abroad, with the majority of them produced and performed at the Ontological Hysteric Theater, a non-profit organization that he founded in 1968 and began as an art-oriented project in the district of SoHo and later moved to a semi-permanent home at Joseph Papp's Public Theater. Notably, from 1992 to 2010, the theater was in residence at the theater at St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery.
Some of Mr. Foreman's work has included plays that have been co-produced by The New York Shakespeare Festival, La Mama Theatre, The Wooster Group, the Festival d'Autumn in Paris and the Vienna Festival. He has collaborated with composer Stanley Silverman on eight music theater pieces produced by The Music Theater Group and The New York City Opera, he wrote and directed the feature film "Strong Medicine," and has been responsible for directing and designing many classical productions with major theaters around the world. Seven of his plays have been published, and books studying his work have been published in English, French and German. Mr. Foreman has received several substantial awards throughout his career for his work, including three Obie Awards for Best Play of the Year, four Obie Awards for directing and sustaining achievement, a Literature Award from the American Academy and Institute of the Arts and Letters, and a Lifetime Achievement in the Theater Award from the National Endowment for the Arts.
In 2004, Mr. Foreman established the Bridge Project with Sophie Haviland to promote international art exchange between countries around the world through workshops, symposiums, theater productions, visual art, performance, and multimedia events. A longtime member of the Dramatist's Guild, the Society of Stage Directors, and PEN, he has also been included in countless editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Entertainment and Who's Who in the East.
