Professor emerita of epidemiology and biostatistics and former associate dean of research at Texas A&M University in the school of public health, Dr. Brender officially retired in 2015. Her many years at the university earned her the respect as a leader in her field, both as a researcher and as an educator. Joining the Texas State University faculty as an associate professor of health services research in 1999, Dr. Brender formerly taught at Texas State University for five years and the Intercollegiate Center for Nursing Education for five years. Her extensive background in the field also included serving as a staff nurse of infectious control with Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, WA, for six years, research health scientist with the Audie L. Murphy Veterans Hospital in San Antonio for one year, and 14 years with the Texas Department of Health in Austin, TX, first as a staff epidemiologist in the bureau of epidemiology, then as the acting program director and director of the environmental epidemiology program, and finally as director of noncommunicable disease epidemiology and toxicology. Dr. Brender then spent another two years as an infectious disease epidemiologist for the Bureau of Disease Control until 1999.
Dr. Brender's research interests have included epidemiology and biostatistics, epidemiology of birth defects, prenatal environmental and occupational exposures and adverse reproductive outcomes, and adverse health effects associated with residential proximity to industrial emissions and hazardous waste sites. She has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles in such publications as "Environmental Health" and has contributed chapters to several books. She was a grant recipient for her research on the topic of birth defects, receiving over $100,000 for her studies from Texas State University from 2011 to 2014, and $1.4 million from the National Institutes of Health between 2007 and 2014. Furthermore, she received an Outstanding Faculty Award in 2008, and a H.E.A.L.T.H. Award in 1994.
A fellow of the American College of Epidemiology and member of the International Society of Environmental Epidemiology, the Society of Epidemiologic Research, the Texas Public Health Association, and a National Research Council committee, Dr. Brender has been included in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World.
Earning a BSN summa cum laude from Whitworth College in 1974, followed by an MN in 1979, and PhD in epidemiology at the University of Washington in 1983, Dr. Brender has been married for 42 years to Dennis Ray Brender and has one daughter. She loves spending her free time participating in church activities, reading, hiking and snorkeling.
