Dr. Kim has been the director of the postharvest technology division at the National Institute of Horticulture and Herbal Science (NIHHS) for the past five years. Located in Wanju, Republic of Korea, the NIHHS, which operates under the umbrella of the Rural Development Administration (RDA) and is a Korean government organization, is responsible for horticultural and herbal research and services in Korea. An experienced research scientist, Dr. Kim formerly spent several years as a senior research scientist for the organization. He also worked as a research scientist in the postharvest technology for NIHHS and in the research planning division of the RDA for a total of 15 years.
In addition to his full-time career in Korea, Dr. Kim also spent a lot of time serving on various committees, including as vice president of The Korean Society of International Agriculture in 2017 and vice president of The Korean Society for Horticultural Science from 2015 to 2017. He currently serves as vice president of The Korean Postharvest Technology Association since 2014, and as the leading PI for the Asian Food and Agriculture Cooperation Initiative since 2012. Furthermore, he spent two years as a visiting scientist for the produce quality and safety laboratory for the Agricultural Research Service within the United States Department of Agriculture between 2001 and 2003, an in-house research agency headquartered in Maryland.
Throughout his career, Dr. Kim has published more than 60 papers on postharvest technology of horticultural crops and quality maintenance and food safety of fresh-cut produce in Korean and international journals, and has contributed to more than 20 books, either as author or contributing author, on topics such as vegetable, postharvest technology, and fresh-cut produce. He has developed practical postharvest technology to export Korean horticultural crops such as strawberries and lettuce, developed environmental sanitation technology and modified atmosphere packaging for fresh-cut produce, developed drying and packaging technology of astringent persimmon, and has conducted research management of a national project on storage and distribution of horticultural crops.
Dr. Kim holds a Bachelor of Science in horticulture from Chungbuk National University, a Master of Science in food science from Korea University, a Ph.D. from Hiroshima University, Japan in the Graduate School of Biosphere Sciences, and holds a national technology qualification as a professional food engineer since December 1998. Becoming involved in the industry because of his desire to develop better technology to maintain quality and food safety of horticultural crops and fresh cut produce that can be practically used in the industry, especially in developing countries such as Africa, Dr. Kim is proud of his hard work. His dedication has also earned him numerous awards, including a Meritorious Service Medal from the International Society for Horticulture Science in 2017, an Outstanding Public Relations Award from the Ministry of Agriculture of Food and Rural Affairs in 2013, and an Outstanding Research Scientist from Rural Development Administration in 2005. Married to his wife Eun Young Noh with two children, Dr. Kim looks forward to many more years in the industry.
