A professor at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in the College of Business and Economics, Department of Industrial Psychology and People Management, since 2011, Dr. Ukpere has extensive experience in the areas of human resources management, employment relations, organizational behavior, business management, management, entrepreneurship, and research and globalization. He also boasts an enormous amount of education, including a bachelor's degree in commerce and a master's degree in commerce, finance and management, from Punjabi University, a Master of Commerce in business administration from Jiwaji University, and a PhD in human resources management and global studies from Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in South Africa.
Prior to joining the faculty at UJ, Dr. Ukpere was a researcher, teacher and subject coordinator at CPUT for three years, where he headed the entrepreneurship and business management department. In the field, he was a member of the Radical Pharmaceutical Company in India, a member of the Central Institute of Management of India, a staff credit control officer for the Central Bank of Nigeria, and a program leader for Employment Relations. He served as a scientific reviewer for several academic journals and international conferences. He is an Editorial Advisory Board member for several academic journals, including the International Journal of Social Economics (Emerald Insight) and the Journal Communication (Kamla Raj). He is a former Chief Editor of the Journal of Management and Technology, former Editor in chief of the African Journal of Business Management, and former co-editor of the South African Journal of Human Resources Management. Papers in progress focus on: the impact of globalisation on the employment relations in Africa; Consistent decision making in disciplinary action in the workplace; the negative effect of capitalistic concepts and mode of operation on labour and society; global stupidity and the current economic crisis; strategic issues affecting the HR and IR practitioner in Africa; globalisation and the phenomenon of child labour; division of labour and outsourcing; globalisation on labour markets in Africa.
Dr. Ukpere has authored three books, two book chapters, 25 conference proceedings and more than 100 articles in ISI, IBSS and DoE accredited Journals. Some of his more recent research has included globalization and employment relations and consistency of disciplinary measures in the workplace, the effect of globalization and financial system on economic growth in Nigeria, and economic and social issues related to foreign land grab and capacity building in Zambian agricultural economy. As a teacher, he demonstrated a keen sense of responsibility towards his students, and his contribution to the development of young academics through mentorship is well acknowledged.
Dr. Ukpere has been a visiting academic to several international institutions such as Punjabi University in Patiala, India, Spiru Haret University in Romania, the University of Cologne in Germany, the University of Port Harcourt, the University of Benin, the University of Lagos and Covenant University in Ota. He is a member of such organizations as the Indian Society of Labor Economics, the Emerald Insight Literati Network, and the Central Institute of Management India. He is a lifetime member of the Afro India Gandhi Peace Foundation and the Environmental Watch. He was the recipient of a Researcher of the Year Award in 2009, and a Golden Researcher of the Year Award from CPUT in 2010, an Iona College Outstanding Scholar Contribution Award in 2012, and a Future-Fit Researcher Award from UJ in 2013. Born in Nigeria, Dr. Ukpere relocated to South Africa in 2003. Married to Gladys Ukpere (a chief professional nurse and midwife), with four children, he loves to travel, read, dance, and work in his garden.
