An epidemiologist and educator with more than 40 years of experience in the field, Dr. Garland excels in his public health work by finding the causes of disease. His top achievements include his work with Dr. Frank C. Garland and Dr. Edward Gorham who together discovered the association between deficiency of vitamin D and risk of breast, colon, ovarian and other cancers. Additionally, he and this team played an important role in establishing that vitamin D deficiency is a cause of Type 1 diabetes and that excessive exposure to ultraviolet A is a predominant cause of human melanoma. Research by his team was the first to establish that secondhand smoking is a cause of fatal coronary heart disease. This study was the basis for historic legislation prohibiting smoking in public places. Today, Dr. Garland is an emeritus professor at the school of medicine at the University of California. An award-winning professional, he was recipient of the Aristotle Award for Academic Excellence at UCLA, the Golden Apple award for teaching excellence from Johns Hopkins University, an Environmental Health Coalition distinguished service award, a National Institutes of Health Research career award, and the 2017 Seelig Award from the American College of Nutrition in recognition of his team's research on use of vitamin D for prevention of cancer and diabetes. Dr. Garland was awarded Knighthood by Italy in 2016 for this research. Most recently, Dr. Garland was selected for inclusion into Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
To prepare for his career, Dr. Garland earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Southern California in 1967, a Master of Public Health from UCLA in 1970 and a Doctor of Public Health from UCLA in 1974. A fellow of the American College of Epidemiology, he remains at the top of his field by participating actively in the field of epidemiology. He is a member of Physicians for Social Responsibility, where he served as chair of the information resources committee. He is also a member of the Sierra Club, where he served as chair of the Save Our Shore committee. As he looks ahead to the future, Dr. Garland intends to continue his work as a professor while performing new research in the field of epidemiology.
