A partner at Cahill Gordon & Reindel, LLP, in New York City from 1979 to 2014, Mr. Ringel served as law clerk to Judge Anthony Celebrezze of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in 1971-2. He then spent the first seven years after his clerkship at Cahill as an associate attorney and the next 35 years as partner. A longtime member of their litigation and antitrust practice groups, he has extensive experience in antitrust, media law, intellectual property and appellate areas, and has been known for having counseled or litigated in a variety of high-visibility media and antitrust matters. During the course of his career at Cahill, Mr. Ringel also served as president of the defense counsel section and as a member of the executive committee of the Media Law Resource Center (MLRC). The executive committee oversees the activities of the defense counsel section of the MLRC, which includes more than 200 law firms across the country, as well as overseas, which specialize in media and First Amendment defense representation.
Three years prior to retiring from his practice, Mr. Ringel began teaching in the history department at John Jay College of Criminal Justice of the City University of New York as an assistant adjunct professor. Mr. Ringel has taught courses in American legal history, justice in the western tradition and a history of freedom of the press in the United States. He maintains an interest in the intersection of legal and social history in a country where law substitutes for many of the shared cultural and social values that have traditionally bound together people in other countries. He is also interested in charting the ongoing battle between the literal words of the First Amendment and First Amendment values, as well as the history of the changing nature of the New York bar and the effects of that change on the law.

He has long been concerned with aiding in the efforts to making public schools better and has an increasing interest in free speech on campus. A longtime member of numerous professional organizations, Mr. Ringel has served as chair of committees on antitrust litigation and the federal judiciary of the New York State Bar's Comnmercial and Federal Litigation Section. He has also served in various capacities on committees of the, the American Bar Association, the MLRC, and the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. He served as a trustee and secretary of the Public Education Association and its successor, the Center for Educational Innovation, where he has been a secretary and a member of the board of trustees since 2001.
