With nearly 40 years of professional experience, Mr. O'Callaghan has been the Image Specialist for Spanish Art at the National Gallery of Art since 2007, having been a slide librarian there from 1988 to 2007. In his current role, he works extensively with the museum's image archives and exhibitions to help provide information to staff and outside researchers. He is responsible for researching, cataloging, classifying and scanning of images, computer systems and database management, reference services, donor archive processing, and exhibition images management, preservation, and installation. In 2011, Mr. O'Callaghan curated the exhibition at the National Gallery of Art, titled "The Solemnity of Shadows: Juan Laurent's Vision of Spain." Prior to joining the Gallery, he worked as a lecturer on the history of art at the Phillips Collection from 1980 to 1984.
An artist himself, Mr. O'Callaghan began his early career studying drawing in Spain where his family moved in 1962. After returning to the United States in 1970, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in visual art and painting from the Corcoran School of Art in 1975, and went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts degree, with honors, in visual art and painting from the American University in 1980. He has been included in numerous group shows both locally and internationally, including the 19th Area Exhibition of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Three International Artists, and the Capital to Capital exhibitions in Bonn, Germany, and All in the Family: A Juried Show of American University Alumni. He has been featured twice in one-man shows at the Alex Gallery, and the Blue Palette Art Gallery, both in Washington, D.C.
Throughout his career, Mr. O'Callaghan has been recognized for his contributions. He received an award for an article in The Burlington Magazine from the National Gallery of Art in 2017, and Special Service Awards in 2011 and 1997. Earlier in his career, he received a Robert H. Smith Fellowship, and a Landscape Painting Fellowship from the Artists for Environment Foundation at the Delaware Water Gap. Mr. O'Callaghan has also been included in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.
