With more than 40 years of professional experience, Mr. Day retired as of counsel from McElroy, Deutsch, Mulvaney & Carpenter, LLP, in 2013, having held this position since 2004. Prior to obtaining this role, he was of counsel with Carpenter, Bennett & Morrissey from 1999 to 2004, having been a senior partner from 1994 to 1998, a partner from 1979 to 1993, after serving as an associate from 1974 to 1978. Earlier in his career, he worked as an associate with Hannoch, Weisman, Stern & Besser from 1973 to 1974. During his tenure, he represented clients in a full range of legal services, including taxation, estate planning, ERISA and employment, real estate, environmental, corporate transactions, and corporate compliance.
Mr. Day began his career as a student at St. Anselm College, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1968. From 1968 to 1970, he served with the U.S. Army as a member of the military police corps, returning to his education for a JD, cum laude, from the University of Maine School of Law in 1973 where he was an Editor of the Maine Law Review. He later earned a Master of Laws in taxation from New York University School of Law in 1976. He has been admitted to practice law in the states of New York and New Jersey, as well as before the U.S. Tax Court and the U.S. District Court of New Jersey. A respected voice in the field, Mr. Day has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations, including the American Bar Association, the Essex County Bar Association, and the New Jersey Bar Association. He was an instructor of employee benefits and commercial law at the American College, and he was the executive vice president, vice chair, and general counsel of Main Steel Polishing Company, Inc., from 1999 to 2011.
In addition to his work in the industry, Mr. Day has been active in the community. He was a member and vice chair of the Allenhurst Board of Adjustment, member and vice chair of the Allenhurst Planning Board, and cubmaster and scoutmaster for the Monmouth Council Boy Scouts of America. He has been a member of Deal Golf and Country Club since 1978 where he has served as an officer and a member of the Board of Directors. He has also been a member of the Sawgrass County Club, the Carnoustie Golf Club, TPC Sawgrass, the Jumping Brook Country Club, the Forsgate Country Club, the Jersey Coast Club of Red Bank, the American Legion, the National Ski Patrol, the 10th Mountain Division Association, and the Appalachian Mountain Club. Named One of Outstanding Young Men of America early in his career, he was also named a Ford Foundation Scholar between 1966 and 1968. He has been included in nearly 70 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in American Law, and Who's Who in Finance and Business. Married to his wife Claire Ann Nicholson since 1970 with whom he has two children, and five grandchildren, Mr. Day loves to play golf and the piano.
