A pioneer in soil health, Dr. Karlen is a research soil scientist and research leader who specializes in soil and crop management, specifically in the areas of soil health and sustainable bioenergy feed stock production. Employed with the United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) in Ames, IA, since 1988, and is currently in the soil, water, and air resources unit. Dr. Karlen also heads the ARS Resilient Economic Agricultural Practices (formerly Renewable Energy Assessment Project) or REAP, a multi-location team that focuses on sustainable harvest of crop residues, and has been a research soil scientist for the organization since 1988. From 1978 to 1988, Dr. Karlen worked for the ARS as a research soil scientist at the Coastal Plains Soil and Water Conservation Research Center in Florence, SC.
Dr. Karlen has also been recognized as a USDA collaborator/professor of soil science within the Agronomy Department at Iowa State University for close to 30 years. In 2015, he was selected as the Agricultural Research Service's Distinguished Research Scientist of the Year. He received the award for his work in developing solutions to soil and crop management problems faced by multiple stakeholders. This recognition included the acknowledgement of outstanding leadership and research accomplishments in the areas of assessing soil quality and identifying soil and crop management practices that can be utilized to provide sustainable bioenergy feedback supplies. He also served as an adjunct faculty member of agricultural and environmental sciences in the soil, crop, and entomology department at Clemson University from 1980 to 2005.
The author and co-author of more than 300 refereed articles, proceedings papers, book chapters, and non-technical publications, Dr. Karlen's soil research involves a systems approach with a core focus on nutrient management. An elected fellow of the American Society of Agronomy, where he received an Agronomic Research Award and a Werner L. Nelson Award in 2001, the Crop Science Society of America, the Soil Science Society of America, where he received an Agronomic Achievement Award in 1996, and an Applied Soil Science Research Award in 2002, and the Soil and Water Conservation Society of America, Dr. Karlen is also a member of the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology and the International Soil Tillage Research Organization.
Growing up on a farm in Wisconsin, Dr. Karlen has attributed his success and passion for the industry to the experiences he received as a child, as well as the time he spent with the 4H. When he began his undergraduate training, he sought to apply his love for nature, agriculture, and science to his career, making soil science a perfect fit for him. Graduating with a BS from the University of Wisconsin in 1973, he then completed an MS at Michigan State University in 1975, and a PhD from Kansas State University in 1978.
Married to Linda Sue Bender for many years until her passing, Dr. Karlen has three children and four grandchildren. In 2017, he was married to Judith Annette Beck. Very active as an assistant scoutmaster and committee chairman for the Boy Scouts of America in Ankeny, IA, for 14 years, he has been cited in more than 30 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
