He has been a Visiting Professor at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Visiting Scientist at Polish Foundry Research Institute, and a Faculty Guest Researcher at NASA Glenn Research Center for eleven years, from 2004 to 2014.
Dr. Asthana has authored or coauthored nearly 200 journal and conference publications and book chapters on diverse research topics in materials science and engineering. He is also an author or coauthor of five books that include Materials Science in Manufacturing (Elsevier), Engineering Materials & Processes Desk Reference (Elsevier), and Solidification Processing of Reinforced Metals (Trans Tech). Dr. Asthana has been an Editor of SpringerMaterials; Editor of Journal of Materials Engineering & Performance; co-editor of the books, Ceramic Integration and Joining Technologies (Wiley) and Green and Sustainable Manufacturing of Advanced Materials (Elsevier). He was also a guest editor of special issues of four frontline materials science and engineering journals published by Elsevier and Springer. He has presented numerous lectures on his research in Poland, Italy, Germany, India, USA, Canada, China, Japan, Czech Republic and UK, and served as a grant reviewer and panelist for U.S. National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Energy, and the U.S. Army among others. Dr. Asthana also serves on various professional society committees, journal editorial boards, and organizing and advisory boards of international conferences.
Dr. Asthana was the inaugural Fulton & Edna Holtby Endowed Chair at University of Wisconsin-Stout where he was also recognized with Outstanding Researcher Award. He is an elected Fellow of American Society for Materials, and a recipient of the Distinguished Engineering Educator Award of The Engineers' Council, Visiting Lecturer Award of American Society for Materials, Dean's Outstanding Alumni Award of University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, a NASA Award for a technical innovation, and several best paper awards from professional societies.
Earning a Bachelor of Science (1980) in metallurgical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur, India, followed by a Master of Science in materials science in 1983, Dr. Asthana completed his Ph.D. in materials engineering at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1991.
Born in Lucknow, India, Dr. Asthana has been married to his wife, Neerja, since 1987, has two grown children, and has been included in many editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World.
