Shlomo Carmi, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

    BALTIMORE, MD, March 05, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Shlomo Carmi, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Carmi celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. A research scientist and mechanical engineering professor, he is now Dean Emeritus in the College of Engineering, and Professor Emeritus of the department of mechanical engineering at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) since 2012, Dr. Carmi most recently taught ENME 320 Introduction to Fluid Mechanics, FYS 1031 Dynamics of Problem Solving, and ENME 670 Continuum Mechanics. He formerly held several teaching and administrative roles at Drexel University, Head of Mechanical Engineering, Wayne State University, and the University of Minnesota, beginning in 1963. In the field, he worked as a rock mechanics research engineer with West Rand Gold Mining Company in Krugersdorp, South Africa, in the early 1960s, was a senior lecturer at the Israel Institute of Technology (IIT), and a part-time research specialist with Ford Motor Company and Detroit Edison Company. His research interests have included hydrodynamic stability and transition to turbulence, non-Newtonian fluid flow, heat and mass transfer, numerical methods and computer simulations, and engineering education.

Throughout his career, Dr. Carmi has spoken many times at various venues in his area of expertise and was a visiting professor at IIT. He was selected Congressional Fellow 1985-1986 by the Engineering Society of Detroit and served as a science advisor to Senator Carl Levin (D-Mich). He edited three books, was an associate editor for the Journal of Fluids Engineering, and contributed numerous articles and reviews to peer-reviewed journals. The recipient of several research grants from multiple organizations, including the Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, and the National Institute for Standards and Technology, he was the recipient of a Faculty Research Award in 1970, while teaching at Wayne State University. He later received a Chair Recognition Award at the Engineering Foundation conference in Santa Barbara, CA, in 1992, won an MEDHC-Chair Award from the Board of Engineering Education through the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) for 1996-1997, and a Dedicated Service Award from Council on Education, also though ASME, in 1998. He was elected to the Board of Governors, ASME and served 2007-2011. In 2008, Dr. Carmi was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Council of Engineering and Architectural Society in Washington, D.C.

An elected lifetime fellow of the ASME and former vice president of engineering education, senior vice president of education, and member of the board of governors, Dr. Carmi has also long been affiliated as a member of the American Society of Engineering Education, the American Physical Society, and the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, where he served as an evaluator of mechanical engineering programs for eight years.

Dr. Carmi was born in Romania, served in the Israeli Army from 1956 to 1958, and earned a BS in mineral engineering cum laude at the University of Witwatersrand in 1962. Relocating to the United States in 1963, the same year he married his wife, Rachel Aharoni, he then completed an MS and PhD in aeronautical engineering at the University of Minnesota. He currently has three children and 10 grandchildren. Notably, Dr. Carmi has been featured in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the World, and several other Who's Who editions throughout his career.
