Since the inception of his career, Dr. Boren has become a widely regarded professional in electric cooperatives. He is also noted as an emeritus professor with Boise State University, where he was responsible for developing a communications program.
A respected voice in the communications industry, Dr. Boren has authored several published works, including "The Human Transaction," "Communication Behavior," "Communication Experiments," "Conducting the Council's Business," "Wildflowers of the Sawtooth Mountains," "Facilitator's Guide for Public Meetings," "Effective Business Writing," "Effective Communication," "Effective Business Communication" and "Mountain Wildflowers of Idaho." Throughout the course of his career, he has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the West.
Prior to pursuing a career in education, Dr. Boren considered becoming a lawyer. He ultimately chose to work as a teacher after discovering that he would not enjoy the life of a law professional. Dr. Boren went on to attend Brigham Young University, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in 1958 and Master of Arts in 1964. During this time, he also worked as an instructor with Purdue University and assistant professor with Brigham Young University. He completed a Ph.D. through Purdue University in 1965. In 1967, Dr. Boren joined the faculty of the University of Montana as an associate professor and in 1971 was hired as a professor by Boise State University to develop their program in communication. He remained at Boise State University until his retirement in 1999, serving 25 years as the Chair of the Department of Communication and also as the first Dean of the College of Social Sciences and Public Affairs. During his period as a professor, he served as treasurer and vice president of the American Forensic Association, vice president and president of the Western Forensic Association and vice president and president of the Western States Communication Association.
In recent years, Dr. Boren has chosen to focus on the governance of consumer-owned utility electric cooperatives. Although he was not initially familiar with the field, he enjoyed learning how to provide electric service to rural areas where investors are usually not willing to go. Since 2009, Dr. Boren has been a member of their board of directors of the National Cooperative Services Corporation serving as president in 2016-2017. He continues to be recognized as the former president of the Idaho Consumer-owned Owned Utilities Association and as vice president of the Snake River Power Association. Dr. Boren recently celebrated a decade as the elected President of the North Custer Hospital District and as vice president of the Challis Area Health Clinic board.
