Prior to this appointment, he held the positions of vice president of strategic planning at Cedars-Sinai from 1990 to 1994, director of management planning at Stanford Health Care from 1986 to 1990, director of management and strategic planning at Stanford Health Care from 1982 to 1985, special assistant to the associate vice president for medical affairs at Stanford Health Care from 1977 to 1982, and the director of health and hospital management in the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene for the City of New York from 1974 to 1976. Previously, he was an administrator and the assistant administrator for the West Adams Community Hospital in 1976.
Additionally, Mr. Merchant was a resident in administration at The Roosevelt Hospital New York City from 1973 to 1974, a biostatistician and administrative coordinator with the Institute of Surgical Studies at the Montefiore Medical Center from 1965 to 1972, and a statistician with the New York Tuberculosis and Health Association from 1963 to 1965. He has also served as a statistician and the assistant statistician with the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene for the City of New York from 1960 to 1963 and 1957 to 1960, respectively. Likewise, Mr. Merchant has maintained membership with the New York Academy of Sciences.
Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Merchant pursued an education at New York University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1957. In 1960, he followed this accomplishment at the same collegiate institution with a Master of Arts. He continued his studies at Columbia University, receiving a Master of Science in 1963. Mr. Merchant concluded his academic efforts in 1974, graduating with a master's degree in health services administration from Columbia University.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Mr. Merchant has contributed to numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. In 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving until his honorable discharge in 1953. He has also served the Department of Health Research and Policy with Stanford Health Care from 1988 to 1990, as well as clinical associate professor with the Department of Family, Community and Preventive Medicine at Stanford University from 1986 to 1988. A contributing author of scientific papers, Mr. Merchant penned "Passion-Sustained Commitment to Excellence: Family-Oriented Parenting and Training" in 2004.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Mr. Merchant has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. He has been recognized as a fellow of the American Public Health Association and the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In addition, Mr. Merchant has been honored as a lifetime fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
