In recognition of his contributions to the field of music education, Dr. Gumm has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in Fine Arts and Higher Education. He maintains involvement with a variety of industry organizations, including the Society for Research in Music Education, Society for Music Teacher Education, National Association for Music Education and American Choral Directors Association, where he holds a national position. Dr. Gumm takes great pride in being invited to present at the Arts in Motion symposium, which took place in Europe in 2016.
A lifelong musician, Dr. Gumm chose to enter the field of music education because he enjoyed working with people. Upon completing a Bachelor of Arts through McPherson College in 1983, he attended Fort Hays State University, where he received a Master of Music in 1986. Dr. Gumm went on to complete a Ph.D. through the University of Utah in 1991. Early in his career, he served as a K-12 vocal music teacher with USD 302 Ransom Schools for two years. Dr. Gumm then joined USD 465 Tonganoxie Schools as a vocal music teacher from 1985 to 1988.
Prior to joining Central Michigan University in 2000, Dr. Gumm served as a teaching assistant and assistant instructor with the University of Utah, assistant professor of music with Ithaca College and assistant professor of music with McPherson College. Since the turn of the century, Dr. Gumm has been credited with authoring numerous works pertaining to his areas of expertise. His publications include "Music Teaching Style: Moving Beyond Tradition," "The Music Director's Cookbook: Creative Recipes for a Successful Program," "The Choral Director's Cookbook" and "Making More Sense of How to Sing." In addition, Dr. Gumm has contributed numerous articles to professional journals. A former board member of the Journal of Music Teacher Education, Dr. Gumm has served on the writing team subcommittee tasked with writing the National Core Arts Standards for Music Performance Ensembles, and serves on the American Choral Directors Association national Research and Publications Standing Committee.
