With more than 40 years of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Perepezko has worked as an IBM-Bascom professor of materials science and engineering for the University of Wisconsin-Madison since 2001. Prior to this appointment, he held the positions of professor of materials science and engineering for the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1981 to 2001, associate professor of metallurgical engineering for the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1978 to 1981, and assistant professor of metallurgical engineering for the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1975 to 1978. Additionally, Dr. Perepezko served as an adjunct professor for Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tohoku University and Beijing University of Technology.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Perepezko pursued an education at NYU Tandon, formerly known as the Polytechnic Institute of New York, earning a Bachelor of Science in metallurgical engineering in 1967. He followed this accomplishment with a Master of Science in metallurgical engineering at NYU Tandon in 1968. Dr. Perepezko concluded his studies in 1973, graduating from Carnegie-Mellon University with a Doctor of Philosophy in metallurgy and materials science.
Beyond his efforts within the field, Dr. Perepezko has contributed to numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He has served on several National Research Council committees and advisory panels for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the U.S. Department of Defense, and the U.S. Department of Education, and he has been on the International Advisory Board for the The Future Liquid Metal Engineering Hub in Brunel University London. He has also found much success with his written works as well, having contributed articles to over 400 esteemed journals, such as Intermetallics, Annual Review of Materials Resistance, Journal of the European Ceramic Society, Surface and Coatings Technology, and the Journal of Materials. He has also served Scripta Materialia as associate editor from 1999 to 2001, and editor from 2001 to 2006, and Acta Materialia as an associate editor from 1999 to 2001.
In addition to his primary trade, Dr. Perepezko remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has maintained membership with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Academy of Engineering, the American Society for Engineering Education, and the American Ceramic Society. Dr. Perepezko is also involved with the American Friends of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the MPIF, The Electrochemical Society, and Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Perepezko has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. A fellow of ASM International, he has been recognized as a fellow of the Materials Research Society in 2013, the Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society in 2004, a research visiting fellow of the Karlsruhle Institute of Technology in 2004, and as a postdoctoral research fellow for Carnegie-Mellon University from 1973 to 1974. An honoree of the National Academy of Engineering in 2004, he has received the AGARD Visiting Lectureship to ONERA from NATO in 1995, the Senior Research Prize Award from the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung/Foundation in 1996, Byron Bird Award for Outstanding Research from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1997, and the Bruce Chalmers Award from The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society in 1997. He has also been presented with Senior Research Award from the ISMANAM in 2004, the Visiting Research Award from the JSPS in 2005, the William Hume-Rothery Award from The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society in 2009, and the Gold Medal from ASM International in 2017. Furthermore, Dr. Perepezko has been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
Attributing his success to his PhD adviser at Carnegie-Mellon University, Professor Massalski, during the early stages of his career, Dr. Perepezko was inspired to enter his field by his exposure to metallurgical engineering in high school. The first individual in his family to earn a college degree, the highlight of his career was being elected to the National Academy of Engineering and the success of many of his former students.
