A professor emeritus of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) since 1997, Dr. Gallager has more than 60 years of professional experience in the areas of electrical engineering and higher education. Beginning with MIT in 1956, he first worked as a research assistant, subsequently becoming an assistant professor, associate professor, and a full professor, working in this capacity from 1967 to 1997. In addition to his primary roles, he served as the co-director of the Laboratory of Information and Decision Systems from 1986 to 1996, the chair of the advisory committee of the National Science Foundation Division on Networking and Communications Research and Infrastructure from 1989 to 1992, a member of the advisory council in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Pennsylvania from 1991 to 1993, and the chair of the advisory committee in the Electrical Engineering Department at The Technion in Haifa, Israel, in 1999.
Dr. Gallager began his career by earning a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1953. He followed this accomplishment by obtaining a Master of Electrical Engineering from MIT in 1957, and subsequently received a Doctor of Science from MIT in 1960. His doctoral thesis, entitled "Low Density Parity Check Codes," was published by the MIT Press in 1963, winning an IEEE Society Golden Jubilee Paper Award in 1998. His research is still actively pursued today. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Information Theory Society of IEEE, where he acted as president in 1971 and was on the board of governors from 1965 to 1972 and from 1979 to 1988.
Throughout his career, Dr. Gallager has authored several publications in relation to his fields of expertise. In 1968, he published "Information Theory and Reliable Communication," which later became a staple textbook regarding information theory for numerous years following its release. In 1995, he published "Discrete Stochastic Processes," and later published a third book in 2013 entitled, "Stochastic Processes: Theory for Applications." He has also acted as the coauthor of the first and second editions of "Data Networks," and he holds several patents in the field.
Dr. Gallager's research and papers have earned him numerous accolades over the years, including the IEEE Baker Prize in 1966, the William Bennett Prize Paper Award in 1993, the Prize Paper Award for Infocomm in 1993, and the ACM Dijkstra Prize in Distributed Computing in 2004.
Additionally, he was presented with the Gold Medal by the Moore School of the University in Pennsylvania in 1973, the Harvey Prize by The Technion in 1999, the Eduard Rhein Basic Research Award in 2002, and the Robert Yarnall Award by the University of Pennsylvania in 2008. He was been awarded fellowships with the Guggenheim Foundation in 1978 and the Marconi Society in 2003. A fellow of the IEEE, he was the recipient of the Medal of Honor in 1990, and he won the Shannon Award from the Information Theory Society of IEEE in 1983.
Married to Marie Tarnowski since 1981, Dr. Gallager is the proud father of three children and grandfather of 17 grandchildren. In his spare time, he enjoys playing piano, skiing, and traveling. He has been inducted into multiple editions of Marquis Who's Who, including Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the East.
