Professor of music at Connecticut College for more than 40 years and former 10-year professor at the Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven between 1996 and 2006, Ms. Harper is a Yale University graduate who earned her Master of Music in 1967. She formerly earned a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, at Smith College and completed postgraduate work at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music.
A well-known educator, musician and performer, during her tenure at Connecticut College, Ms. Harper was a flutist for the New Haven Symphony Orchestra from 1965 to 1970, and the U.S. Coastguard Band in New London in 1975. She directed the annual "Back to Bach" series for an entire decade and the "Women in Music" series for six years, and was a founding member of the Connecticut College Woodwind Quintet. She also directed the Trevor Wye's Residency Master Class from 1989 to 1997. She taught flute master classes during the summer months in Monterey, CA, Brownsville, VT and Greensville, SC, between 1989 and 2017.
As a performer, Ms. Harper has played throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, Scotland and England. She has been active in the field as a judge for the National Flute Association's master class competition, has given numerous presentations in her field at conventions and universities, and has served as an editor, consulting editor, and co-editor for various works, including authoring and narrating "The Remarkable Career of Julius Baker," which is available on CD through the Manhattan Flute Center, Inc.
A lifetime member of the New York Flute Club, the British Flute Society and the National Flute Association, where she formerly served on the executive board and as secretary, Ms. Harper was the recipient of two Faculty-Student Engagement Awards from Connecticut College in 2017. She was also named to the Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame by Red Bank Regional High School in 2005. Married to the late architect, Robert L. Harper, F.A.I.A. in 1964 and the mother of two children, Ms. Harper enjoys hiking, traveling and bird watching.
