Mr. Beber left a huge impact not only in the legal field but also in the chemical business. Recently retiring from W.R. Grace & Co. in New York City in 2011, he formerly spent 22 years at the American chemical conglomerate, which is based in Columbia, MD. First hired as an assistant general counsel of litigation in 1988, he later moved into the roles of vice president and director of litigation, senior vice president and general counsel, and executive vice president. During Mr. Beber's tenure, he was able to put together an amazing litigation team by hiring and training some of the best leaders in the business. The company, which is divided into three branches, Grace Catalysts Technologies, Grace Materials Technologies, and Grace Construction Products, is a specialty chemicals and materials company that develops, manufactures, licenses, and supports industry-leading technologies, their catalysts technologies, and materials technologies business segments. They employ more than 6,700 employees across nearly 40 countries.
First earning a Bachelor of Science in economics and Doctor of Jurisprudence at Duke University in 1955 and 1957, respectively, Mr. Beber also served three years in the U.S. Army between 1958 and 1961. Admitted to both the New York and North Carolina Bar Association, he began his career with Everett, Everett & Everett in North Carolina, then spent time representing the Small Business Administration in Washington, D.C., followed by 18 years representing the technology giant RCA. In 1981, he was taken on board as senior vice president, general counsel and secretary of the GAF Corporation in New York City, later serving as executive vice president, director, and director subsidiary. Taken on board with PHLCORP, Inc. (formerly Baldwin United Corp.), in 1984 as the company's senior vice president, general counsel and secretary, four years later, he had left for W.R. Grace & Co.
A member of the American Bar Association, the New York Bar Association, the Florida Bar Association, and the North Carolina Bar Association, Mr. Beber has also been a longtime member of the board of visitors for the Duke University School of Law since 1996. He recently served as director of Advantage Bank in Palm Beach, FL, from 1999 to 2003, and spent time as chairman of the board for Health Care Plan New Jersey and as vice president of the South Jersey Chamber of Commerce. In honor of his dedication to his alma mater, Mr. Beber and his wife Joan dedicated the Robert and Joan Beber Sculpture Garden on the Duke University campus, located on the law school property behind the building, in April 2007, in connection with Mr. Beber's 50th reunion.
Mr. Beber has been highlighted in close to 70 editions of Who's Who throughout his career, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
