Roop, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Roop celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
A widely regarded energy economist, Dr. Roop is noted for his focus on energy use, especially in industry. He served as a scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory for nearly thirty years. Since he moved to the Laboratory in 1981, he has contributed numerous articles to professional journals including The Energy Journal and Energy, has authored or co-authored numerous Laboratory publications, co-authored an International Energy Agency Publication on Energy and the Environment, co-authored three Department of Energy publications, and, with Jae Edmonds and Michael Scott, co-authored two publications for the Pew Center for Global Climate Change. He retired from the Laboratory in 2006, but continued to work there on a part-time basis for another five years. During his career he served as the first chair of the American Association for an Energy Efficient Economy's Industrial Summer Study and served on the board for the Industrial Energy Technology Conference.

During his professional career he maintained involvement with a wide range of industry organizations, including the American Economic Association, the Econometric Society, the International Association for Energy Economics, the American Statistical Association and the American Agricultural Economics Association.
Since his retirement, he has turned his attention to other topics, most recently genealogies. He is currently working on a memoire.
Early in his career, Dr. Roop received a Bachelor of Science from Central Missouri University in 1963. While pursuing formal education, he became acquainted with a very dynamic professor of economics who challenged him in a way he had never been challenged before. Dr. Roop attributes a significant portion of his professional development to two of his former professors, namely Joseph Dolecki and Millard Hastay. He is especially grateful to Joseph Dolecki because he launched him on his career as an economist and Millard Hastay because he provided Dr. Roop with the tools that allowed him to do the work that he has done. After completing military service with the U.S. Army between 1966 and 1968, he went on to pursue a Ph.D. through Washington State University, which he received in 1973.
A committed researcher, Dr. Roop previously received a research grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service between 1971 and 1973. He briefly served as an economist with the Economic Research Service for four years before joining Evans Econs., Inc., in 1979. Dr. Roop served as a staff scientist with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory for three decades prior to his retirement in 2011. Since the turn of the century, he has been recognized as an adjunct professor with the department of economics at Washington State University.
