Mr. Widdicombe has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the field of library sciences

Mr. Widdicombe was the recipient of the Friend of Stevens Award in 2014

UTICA, NY, April 06, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Richard Palmer Widdicombe with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Widdicombe celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

A celebrated figure in the field of library sciences, Mr. Widdicombe was the F.W. Taylor Curator of the Stevens Institute of Technology from 2007 until 2009. Now retired, he spends his time as an owner of a private art collection, a profession in which he has been involved since 2011. Prior to his position as a curator, Mr. Widdicombe was the director of libraries and an assistant librarian at the Stevens Institute of Technology from 1966 to 2006, an assistant librarian at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art from 1965 to 1966, and an assistant librarian with Yonkers Public Library from 1964 to 1965.

Writing a seminal article in Science & Technology Libraries Vol. 14(1) 1993, titled "Eliminating all Journal Subscriptions…" Mr. Widdicombe outlined the research and application whereby libraries and customers of the future would search for (as we do now in GOOGLE) individual articles or more accurately specific information rather than search broadly and perhaps inaccurately for answers. This was discussed furiously in world conferences as older librarians and universities clung to the concept of purchasing and storing everything in paper format. Mr. Widdicombe considers this publication to be a major advance in the thought of information distribution and retrieval.

In preparation for his successful career, Mr. Widdicombe first obtained a Bachelor of Arts in English and music from Alfred University in 1963. He followed this accomplishment with a Master of Library Science from Syracuse University in 1964. Since that time, he became a pioneer of library technology, introducing the first library computer database on the East Coast and promoting Stevens Institute of Technology as the forefront of innovation. In 1999, the Council on Library and Information Resources recognized Stevens Institute of Technology as one of the top nine most innovative libraries in the United States.

As a leading expert in the field, Mr. Widdicombe maintains affiliation with numerous professional organizations, including as a member of the board of directors of the Utica Symphony Orchestra since 2010 and vice president and member of the board of directors of Sculpture Space since 2009. In addition, he is a former trustee of The Sagamore Institute from 2006 to 2009, the chair of the board of trustees of the Hoboken Historical Museum from 2002 to 2004, and a trustee of Alfred University. His passion for the arts, music, and library science has transformed the lives of students and colleagues alike.

In recognition of his exceptional accomplishments, Mr. Widdicombe was the recipient of the Friend of Stevens Award in 2014. However, Mr. Widdicombe considers his greatest achievement to have been watching his students blossom into successful figures in their own lives through his influence.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Richard Palmer Widdicombe has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
