With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Brunner has been recognized as a professor emeritus of the University of Lausanne since 2003, also serving as an advisor with the Medizinische Poliklinik, Universitätsspital from 2005 to 2007. Prior to his retirement, he was a professor of medicine with the school since 1990, having been an associate professor since 1974. He was also the head of the division of hypertension and vascular medicine from 1997 to 2003, head of the hypertension division from 1986 to 1997, and head of the renal and hypertension division from 1974 to 1986. In addition to his primary roles, he was a visiting professor in the department of physiology with the University of Melbourne in 1997. Earlier in his career, he was program director of the New York-Presbyterian Hospital Clinical Research Center from 1973 to 1974, and an assistant professor at Columbia University from 1972 to 1974, having been a research associate with the school from 1971 to 1972.
Dr. Brunner began his career as a student at the University of Basel, earning a Doctor of Medicine in 1964. He then joined the University of Geneva for an internship and residency in the Department of Medicine and a research fellowship with the Laboratory of Clinical Pathophysiology from 1964 to 1966. He later traveled to the United States for a research fellowship in hypertension with New York-Presbyterian Hospital. An expert in hypertension, high blood pressure, vascular disease, and cardiovascular pharmacology, he is known for his research on the role of the renin-angiotensin system in blood pressure regulation and was among the first medical practitioners to introduce the use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors in the treatment of hypertension and congestive heart failure.
A consultant for several organizations throughout his career, Dr. Brunner is at present an advisor for Damian Pharma and is currently on the board of directors of Noorik Biopharmaceuticals. Active with several professional organizations, he is a past treasurer of the International Society of Hypertension and the European Society of Hypertension, and he is a past vice president of the International Society of Hypertension. Dr. Brunner has written extensively in his field, contributing more than 400 reviewed papers and professional publications, nearly 100 reviews in professional journals, 11 proceedings, 145 book chapters, and nearly 100 additional pieces in other publications. Furthermore, he has been an editorial board member for numerous publications, including the Journal of Hypertension, Hypertension, Kidney International, Clinical Sciencec and the Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology.
Honored many times for his work, Dr. Brunner was recently inducted as an honorary corresponding member of Deutsche Hochdruckliga, received a 2012 Haralambos Gavras Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hellenic Society of Hypertension and the Benoist Prize, the main Science Award of the Swiss Government. In 2000, he also received the Novartis Award from the council for high blood pressure research with the American Heart Association. Married with two children, one of whom is a biologist and the other a physicist, Dr. Brunner is enjoying his retirement by traveling, doing outdoor activities, reading, and listening to music.
