He has served as a partner at Neaves & Gillespie, P.A., since 1980, with a concentration in domestic law, criminal law and personal injury law, as well as handling other areas of legal work. Outside of the law office, he also served as an active member of the Surry-Yadkin Mental Health Authority from 1981 to 1991, acting as the vice chairman and chairman within that time. He is also an active member of his community and held the title of Commissioner of the town of Jonesville, North Carolina, from 1983 to 1985, mayor from 1985 to 1993, member of the executive committee of the Northwest Piedmont Council Governments in 1987, secretary from 1988 to 1989, and chairman from 1990 to 1991.
Mr. Gillespie has had many mentors throughout his life. Growing up, his pastor, Roy Deck, pushed him to go to college and follow his passion for helping others, leading him to pursue the career he is now so successful in. He also thanks B.F. Folger Jr., a local banker who took Mr. Gillespie under his wing and encouraged him to achieve professional success. As a student in law school, attorney David Wininger also served as an inspiration. In addition, Mr. Gillespie's first employer, Charles M. Neaves, also showed a particular interest in him, Mr. Gillespie always had the drive to pursue a career in law to better help serve the people in his community. His parents even claim that he wanted to be a lawyer when he was five years old.
Mr. Gillespie received a law degree from the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in 1980, graduating magna cum laude and as a member of Phi Alpha Delta and the Society Curia Honoris. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Carolina. He was admitted to practice in the State of North Carolina, the Middle District of the United States District Court of North Carolina, the Western District of the United States District Court of North Carolina, and the Fourth Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals. He served as a member of the board of editors of the Cumberland Law Review from 1978 to 1980, and is a member of the American Bar Association, the American Association for Justice, the North Carolina Bar Association, the North Carolina Advocates for Justice, and the Surry County Bar Association. He also acted as a member of the board of directors and as vice president of the Elkin Jaycees in the 1980s and was a charter member and member of the board of directors of the Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce from 1987 to 1990. Mr. Gillespie was recognized as one of the 10 Best Family Law Attorneys for Client Satisfaction in 2017, awarded by the American Institute of Family Law Attorneys. He has been married to Regina Lee Robinson for 20 years and has one child, John Foster Gillespie and two step-children, Neil Boss and Linda Boss. In his spare time, he enjoys tennis, basketball, reading, and traveling.
