With over four decades of experience separating raw resources into useable materials, Mr. Kister is a world-class chemical engineer and a pioneering authority in the field of fractionation technology. He has background in all phases of distillation and absorption, including operation, troubleshooting, design, start-up, and research for the chemical, petrochemical and oil industries. He is also a prolific author on the subject of distillation. He is the author of three textbooks, Distillation Operation & Distillation Design (McGraw-Hill Inc, 1990 & 1992) and Distillation Troubleshooting (Wiley Interscience, 2006), over 110 technical articles on Distillation and Absorption, the Distillation Equipment Section in Perry's Handbook, and the 2018 Distillation chapter in the Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology. He is the sole instructor in the IChemE sponsored "Practical Distillation Technology", the world's leading distillation training course, which he has conducted worldwide over 500 times. He holds five patents in the field of distillation and absorption regarding designs and methods in the petrochemicals industry. Mr. Kister is credited with transforming distillation troubleshooting from an art mastered by a few to a science that can be applied by all.
Born to Drs. J.M and H. Kister, Mr. Kister graduated from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. He earned a bachelor's degree in 1973 and went on to work as a process engineer with ICI Australia Ltd, a major chemical company. Mr. Kister earned a master's degree in engineering in 1977. He became a startup superintendent in ICI, where he served until 1980. He is a chartered engineer and a chartered fuel technologist in the U.K. and Australia.
Mr. Kister moved to California in 1980 to become a research engineer with Fractionation Research, Inc, in South Pasadena, which tests distillation equipment on an industrial scale. In 1981, he became senior process engineer at the engineering company C.F. Braun, and three years later, he was promoted to principal process engineer and ultimately in 1990 to technical advisor at Brown & Root Braun. In 1999, Mr. Kister became senior fellow and director of fractionation technology at Fluor Corp. in Aliso Viejo, California. Mr. Kister has been awarded the honor of membership in the US National Engineering Academy. Mr. Kister is a Fellow of AlChE, which presented him with the 1992 and 1994 Outstanding Paper Award, the 2003 Gerhold Award for Contributions to Separation Technology, the 2005 South Texas Chemical Engineering Practice Achievement Award, the 2009 Founders Award for Outstanding Contributions to Chemical Engineering, the 2010 Fuels and Petrochemicals Division Award, and the 2011 George Lappin Award. Since 1986, Mr. Kister has been building the AIChE distillation symposia, which are now the largest distillation symposia in the Western Hemisphere. Since 2013, The AIChE has rewarded his activity by naming their largest distillation symposia, chaired by him every other year, "The Kister Distillation Symposium".
Mr. Kister is Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) in the U.K. and Australia, which presented him with the 1980 Humphrey and Glasgow Medal and the 2003 Hutchinson Medal. Mr. Kister is the recipient of the 2014 ExxonMobil Award from the Institute of Engineers (Australia) and the 2002 Chemical Engineering Achievement Award from Chemical Engineering Magazine. He is a member of the Institute for Energy (UK). For a lifetime of dedication to the science of fractionation, Mr. Kister was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in the World.
