With more than 60 years of industry experience, Dr. McCartney worked on the staff of Butler Hospital with Care New England Health System from 1980 until his retirement in 1998. Additionally, he held the roles of the director of geropsychiatry for Lifespan in 1998, psychiatrist-in-chief for the Miriam Hospital from 1980 to 1997, associate attending psychiatrist with Nassau Hospital from 1964 to 1971, and attending psychiatrist at Meadowbrook Hospital from 1961 to 1964. He also held multiple positions for North Shore University Hospital with Northwell Health, including director of training and education from 1972 to 1979, associate psychiatrist and attending psychiatrist from 1964 to 1980, chief of liaison services from 1973 to 1980, and associate director from 1978 to 1980.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. McCartney pursued an education at Ohio Wesleyan University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1952. He followed this accomplishment at Columbia University, graduating in 1955 with a Doctor of Medicine. Dr. McCartney concluded his studies in 1989, receiving an honorary Master of Arts from Brown University. Dr. McCartney began his career as an intern at Boston City Hospital from 1955 to 1956, a resident in psychiatry with Saint Elizabeths Hospital from 1958 to 1959, and a resident in psychiatry with the Institute of Living as a part of Hartford Healthcare from 1959 to 1961. He was a Captain in the U.S. Army from 1956 to his honorable discharge in 1958.
In addition to his primary roles, Dr. McCartney has contributed to numerous endeavors in his professional circles. He served on the Advisory Board of the Mental Health Association of Nassau County, New York from 1972 to 1980 when he moved from North Shore University Hospital to the Mission Hospital and Brown University School of Medicine. He has served Brown University for nearly 30 years, first as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry from 1980 to 1988, then Associate Professor from 1988 to 1998, and retiring as an Associate Professor Emeritus in 1999. Since 1981 he functioned as a consultant to the Impaired Physician Committee for the Rhode Island Medical Society. Since retirement, he has run an Alzheimer's Disease Support Group with his wife. Throughout his career he has been a contributor of many articles to esteemed journals.
A respected voice in the field, Dr. McCartney remains affiliated with various professional organizations. He is a member of the Rhode Island Medical Society, the Association for Academy Psychiatry, the Providence Medical Association, and the American Association of General Hospital Psychiatrists. Dr. McCartney is also a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc., the American Board of Geriatric Psychiatry, and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. McCartney has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. He was recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and a Fellow of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine.
