Now retired and Professor Emerita of Foreign Languages and Literatures at Gallaudet University, Dr. Hartig taught French Language and Literature for over forty years in several different colleges and universities After several years teaching in Pennsylvania, Dr. Hartig decided to explore different options before she committed further to this career.Moving to Baltimore, she became a counselor to nursing students at Mercy Hospital. She enjoyed supporting these lovely young women in their daily lives and began to realize that the teaching profession would give her the opportunity to continue to help young people to develop and enable her to teach foreign languages, which had always been her passion, as well.
In 1973, Dr. Hartig applied for a teaching post at Gallaudet University. Excited to hear that this premier school for the deaf would hire her as an Instructor of Foreign Languages for a year, she decided to move to Washington, D.C., and to accept the challenge. It was indeed a challenge, as all instructors were required to teach their students in American Sign Language and Dr. Hartig was new to Deaf Studies.
She took an eight-week intensive course in American Sign Language that also included instruction on educational and social issues facing the deaf community and met some of the extraordinary people who would become her colleagues. She quickly fell in love with the work and one year stretched into thirty-eight, as she worked her way up to the rank of full professor.
Becoming engaged, as well, with the governance of the institution, Dr. Hartig was on the University's Grievance Committee, served two full terms on the Faculty Senate and became the elected Faculty Representative to the Gallaudet University Board of Trustees for two years.
In more recent years, Dr. Hartig established a scholarship for individuals doing research in the literature of International Deaf Studies, desiring to add to the fine work already being accomplished in linguistics. She hopes that individuals receiving the award will feel validated in their work and continue to write and research in the field.
In other areas of her life, Dr. Hartig is a longtime member of The Washington Ethical Society (WES) having served as a member of The Committee for a Caring Community, The Lay Leadership Development Committee and its Board of Trustees. Currently she is a convener/leader at the WES Sunday Book Club which is reading works that focus on the issue of marginality in society. She is also a new but dedicated member of the Study Group on Aging, sponsored by the Washington School of Psychiatry.
Dr. Hartig is the author of several books, including: Man and French Society: Changing Images and Relationships, 1989, Struggling Under the Destructive Glance: Androgyny in the Novels of Guy de Maupassant, 1991, Crossing the Divide: Representations of Deafness in Biography, 2006, and Franchir le fossé …, 2013. She has also contributed articles to numerous journals in her areas of expertise.
Dr. Hartig is a member of the American Association of Teachers of French, The Modern Language Association, The Alliance Francaise and The Washington Biography Group. She has also received grants from The Gallaudet Research Institute and was a proud recipient of a Dr. James E. Haynes Memorial Academic Freedom Award from Gallaudet University's branch of The American Association of University Professors in 2007.
Born in Brooklyn to immigrant parents, Dr. Hartig went on to earn an undergraduate degree from Brooklyn College in 1960 and an M.A. from Rutgers University in 1962. She completed her Doctorate in Modern Languages and Literatures at The Catholic University of America in 1986. She enjoys Sacred Circle Dancing, creative writing, and classical music in her free time and she has been highlighted in over 20 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
