Dr. Waldron is recognized in the health care industry for his expertise in radiology and neuroradiology. Since 1980, he has served as a radiologist at the Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital, where he served also as director of radiology from 1980 to 1990. He also serves in academia as a professor of clinical radiology at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine where he has been on the faculty since 1985. He previously served as clinical professor of radiology at the Loma Linda (California) University School of Medicine and at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University as associate professor of clinical radiology. Additionally, Dr. Waldron was a trustee to Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital for eight years, beginning in 1990. In the 1970s, he served the French Hospital and French Medical Clinic in San Luis Obispo, CA, as vice president, director and director of radiology, the Mount Auburn Hospital, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he worked as associate radiologist, and the Harvard Medical School, where he served in academics as a clinical assistant in radiology. He began his academic career as an instructor of radiology in the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University in 1968.
In addition to his career, Dr. Waldron applied his professional expertise with a number of different institutions. From 1988 to 1990, he acted as managing partner at Richland Radiological Associates. He also founded the Chilean North America Hospital Corporation in 1989, and acted as president of MedBill from 1984 to 1995. Dr. Waldron was civically engaged with multiple organizations, including the American Cancer Society, where he acted as a member of the board of directors. He was also hand-picked in 1963 to work with the United States Public Health Service, where he served for two years. He was contiguously sent to Panama and Chile by the Peace Corps; the opportunity to work as a doctor and acting director of the Peace Corps in Panama during the Panama riots was one of the highlights of Dr. Waldron's career.
Dr. Waldron knew he wanted to be a doctor when he was a child. At the age of five, he received a doctors' bag with a stethoscope, and his passion for medicine seemed to have grown from there. He graduated from Harvard University with a Doctor of Medicine in 1962 and received a Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University in 1958. After graduating with his doctorate in medicine, Dr. Waldron interned at the Massachusetts General Hospital for one year. He completed his residency in radiology at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City in 1968. After completing his residency, he held the position of special fellow of neuroradiology at the Neurological Institute at Columbia University for one year.
Dr. Waldron is recognized as a diplomate of radiology and neuroradiology by the American Board of Radiology. He has published numerous articles in medical journals and was honored as a fellow of the American College of Radiology, a title only awarded to about 8 percent of radiologists. He is also a fellow of the Society of International Medical Science Cooperation and a member of the American Medical Association, the American Roentgen Ray Society, the Radiological Society of North America, the American Society of Neuroradiology, the Columbia Medical Society, the Ivy Club of Princeton, the Members Club of Woodcreek and Wildewood, and the Governors Club of Kiawah Island. Additionally, Dr. Waldron served as the past president of the San Luis Obispo County Medical Society, the Sierra-Cascade Trauma Society and the South Carolina Radiological Society.
In recognition of his outstanding research and professional excellence, Dr. Waldron was awarded grants from a number of institutions, including the James Picker Foundation, the American Cancer Society, the National Research Council, the National Academy of Sciences and the National Cancer Institute. Born in Carbondale, IL, Dr. Waldron is the son of Robert Leroy and Violet Mae (Thompson) Waldron. He is married to Sandra Sellers. They are the parents of four children, Richard, Robert Leroy III, Ryan, and Burton Johnson, and the proud grandparents of four grandchildren. Dr. Waldron often travels around the country with his wife in a locum tenens capacity; he covers radiologists who are on leave or vacation. He tends to pick places where his children live so that he also has the chance to spend more time with his family. Last summer, he and his wife went to Alaska. In his spare time, Dr. Waldron enjoys playing tennis, golfing, and both salt and fresh water fishing.
