Dr. Petz received his MD degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1955. He completed an internship and one year of residency in Internal Medicine at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, and completed his residency at San Francisco (SF) General Hospital and San Francisco VA hospital. He completed a fellowship in Hematology at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London, and is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is a Diplomate in the Subspecialty of Hematology.
He has held positions as Chief of Medicine at Walker Air Force Base; Chief of Medicine and Director of Hematology-Immunology Research Unit, Harkness Community Hospital and Medical Center, SF; Senior Scientist and Chief of Hematology-Immunology Research Unit, Institutes of Medical Sciences, Pacific Medical Center, SF; Section Head, Hematology and Blood Transfusion Services and Chairman, Division of Medicine, City of Hope Medical Center, Duarte, California; and Professor of Pathology and Director of Transfusion Medicine, UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles. At present, he is Emeritus Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, UCLA Medical Center and Medical Director of StemCyte International Cord Blood Bank, Baldwin Park, CA.
He was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honorary Medical Society and was President of the Alpha Chapter. He has served as President of the California Blood Bank Society and has been a member of the American Society of Hematology, the American Association of Blood Banks, the Federation for Clinical Research, the International Society of Blood Transfusion, the International Society of Hematology, the California Academy of Medicine, the Western Association of Physicians, and the Cord Blood Association.
He has co-authored two editions of the book, Immune Hemolytic Anemias, and was co-editor of three editions of Clinical Practice of Transfusion Medicine. He was also co-editor of Clinical Bone Marrow Transplantation, and Laboratory Medicine – Test Selection and Interpretation and Policy Alternatives in Transfusion Medicine. Further, he has authored more than 250 publications in medical journals on hematology, immunology, transfusion medicine, cord blood banking and cord blood transplantation.
He has received numerous Honors including the Frank Allende Memorial Lecture, University of California, SF; Jean Stubbins Annual Lecturer, University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, TX; Transfusion Medicine Academic Award, National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI); Ruth Sanger Oration, Australasian Society of Blood Transfusion, New Zealand; Emily Cooley Award, American Association of Blood Banks (AABB); Morten Grove-Rasmussen Memorial Award (AABB); Tibor Greenwalt Scientific Memorial Award and Lectureship (AABB); Owen Thomas Award, California Blood Bank Society (CBBS); Service and Leadership Award, (CBBS); Argencord Lectureship (Argentina); Life time Achievement Award (AABB); International Cord Blood Symposium Leadership Award for Service 2003-2014; Herbert Perkins and George Garratty Memorial Lectureship (CBBS); and the President's Award (AABB).
