Dr. Attebery is a former high school teacher, college professor, and academic administrator who spent close to 50 years in the field. First hired to teach at Middleton High School in Idaho in 1949, he later taught at several other high schools before moving into academia as an assistant professor of English at The College of Idaho in Caldwell in 1961. Remaining at the College until 1998, when he retired as a full professor, he also served as the acting academic vice president at Albertson College of Idaho between 1983 and 1984 and as the holder of the Eyck-Berringer Chair of English at The College of Idaho between 1987 and 1998.
During his tenure on campus, Dr. Attebery was lucky to have three future Rhodes scholars in his classes. He also served on the board of trustees for several years. He was recognized with an Outstanding Teacher Award in 1967, an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in 1991, and a College of Idaho President's Medallion in 2010. He also won an Outstanding Achievement in Humanities Award from the Idaho Humanities Council, was inducted into the Idaho Hall of Fame in 2011, and received a Distinguished Alumni Award in 2011.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Attebery published an extensive number of articles, as well as six books, including "Idaho Folklife: Homesteads to Headstones" (Senior Editor), "The College of Idaho 1891-1991: A Centennial History," and "The Most of What We Spend." He has a fondness for literature, folklore, and history. Before retiring, Dr. Attebery spent one semester as a visiting fellow at Harvard University from 1993 to 1994. He was president of West Shore Press from 1998 to 2009.
Dr. Attebery grew up in Idaho, graduated from Weiser High School, and served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946 before working toward his degrees. Attending The College of Idaho, he completed his undergraduate degree, cum laude, in 1950 and went on to receive a master's degree at the University of Montana in 1951 and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Denver in 1961.
The recipient of a Bruern Fellowship from the University of Leeds in England, Dr. Attebery has been cited in close to 50 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who in the West. A longtime member of the Western Literature Association, where he formerly served on the executive council, he is also a member of the Association of Literary Scholars and Critics. Locally, Dr. Attebery served several years as a trustee of the Idaho Historical Society. Married since 1947 to his wife Barbara Phyllis Olson, they share two children, four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
