Professor emerita at Sacred Heart University since 2017, Dr. Trefry began teaching at the Fairfield school as an adjunct professor in 1994. She served as the interim MBA director, Luxembourg programs liaison, and chair of the management department. Prior to entering academia, she worked with a group of independent consultants where she specialized in change management, performance appraisal systems and management training. She also worked in senior management positions in large public library systems in Kansas City, KS, and suburban Washington, DC (Fairfax County).
During her teaching years, Dr. Trefry focused on leadership, organizational behavior, cross-cultural management and managing change. She primarily taught in the MBA program, both in Connecticut and Luxembourg. Her research interests have focused on cross-cultural issues and change management, and she has been known for presenting her research at academic conferences across the United States and in Europe.
Serving on dozens of committees throughout her career, some of which most recently included the Council on Internationalization from 2015 to 2017, the University Education Study Abroad Committee from 2013 to 2015, and the Internationalization Task Force from 2013 to 2014, all of which are associated with Sacred Heart University, Dr. Trefry has served her local community in many ways as well. She spent over seven years on several committees, including the Board of the Mercy Learning Center in Bridgeport, CT, the board of directors of the Bridgeport Hospital Auxiliary at Yale New Haven Health in Bridgeport, and was a member of the Near & Far Aid Association, Inc. She continues to maintain membership with the Eastern Academy of Management, the Organizational Behavior and Teaching Society and the North American Case Writers Association.
Dr. Trefry's research has resulted in her authoring and co-authoring dozens of publications, including "Windows on the World: An Experiential Exercise" in 2014, and "Culture Shock: Hiding in Plain Sight" in 2012, both of which were included in the Organizational Management Journal. Her career has also earned her several awards from Sacred Heart University, including a Faculty Global Engagement Award in 2017, a Distinguished Service Award from the Alumni Organization in 2017, and the Bishop Walter J. Curtis Award from the University in 2013 and the University's Teaching Excellence Award in 2004.
In the future, Dr. Trefry plans to continue participating in the Sacred Heart University USA/Luxembourg "Connections" program and teach an occasional course. She also intends to write a book, as well as several articles that will focus on how valuable and important it is to try to understand the perspectives of other people.
Dr. Trefry earned a Bachelor of Arts in French at Agnes Scott College in 1969. She later received a Master of Library Science in library and information services at the University of Maryland in 1974, a Master of Arts in organizational and social psychology at Columbia University in 1987, and a Doctor of Philosophy in organizational and social psychology at Columbia University in 1991. Married to Robert Trefry, Dr. Trefry has two children and four grandchildren.
