PITTSBURGH, PA, April 26, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Wolfgang Justus Choyke, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Choyke celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Research professor Dr. Choyke is a physicist who spent the first 36 years of his career with Westinghouse Research Laboratories in Pittsburgh between 1952 and 1988. In 1974, he also began teaching and doing research at the University of Pittsburgh. Upon retiring from Westinghouse in 1988 he assumed the position of research professor of physics at the University of Pittsburgh. He now spends all his time doing research with his graduate students.
Working within the Pittsburgh Quantum Institute on campus, Dr. Choyke and his team are primarily interested in the optical and electronic characterization of currently important large band gap semiconductors such as AIN, GaN and SiC. Much emphasis in the research is placed on a close collaboration with the world's outstanding growers of single crystal boule material or single crystal epitaxial films. He and his collaborators are responsible for developing much of the fundamental understanding of SiC. In addition he has acted as sort of a catalyst to bring semiconducting SiC from an obscure research area into its current status as a world-wide, major and rapidly growing industrial enterprise.
Dr. Choyke holds several patents in his field, has contributed numerous articles to peer reviewed journals based upon his research, and has edited several books as well. Between 1988 and 1998, he performed consulting work for Northrop Grumman and Westinghouse Science and Technology Center in Pittsburgh, served as chairman of the committee on large band gap semiconductor devices for the National Research Council, and was a visiting professor at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg from 1990 to 2004.
Serving in the U.S. Army Signal Corps between 1944 and 1946, Dr. Choyke completed his undergraduate degree at Ohio State University in 1948 and Doctor of Philosophy in nuclear physics in 1952. He was a recipient of a Westinghouse Order of Merit in 1983, and a Humboldt Research Prize in 1990. An elected fellow of the American Physical Society, where he served as a member of the committee of application physics for 11 years, he is also a longtime member and Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Material Research Society. Married to his wife, Helen Ruth Rubenfeld, for nearly 60 years until her passing in 2007, Dr. Choyke has two children, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He has been cited in over 40 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Wolfgang Justus Choyke, Ph.D., has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
