COLUMBIA, SC, April 26, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Edgar Heberton Ellis Jr., Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Ellis celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Noteworthy is the fact that he earned every penny of the cost of his entire education. He worked at a propane gas plant from 1954 to 1956 to cover the cost of the first two years of college credits—done at Spartanburg Methodist College in Spartanburg, SC. A marriage (June 17, 1956 to Iris Loraine Clardy), some illness, and the birth of a child (a daughter – Patricia Loraine – born December 16, 1957) caused a five-year lapse in his education. It's called "too many bills and not enough money."
Dr. Ellis got back on track in 1961 serving a circuit of four small churches (the Blenheim Circuit) living in rural SC, eight miles outside of Bennettsville, SC and 25 miles from Laurinburg, NC where he finished his last two years of college at St. Andrews University – graduating in 1965 with a BA degree. He then moved to a rural circuit, eight miles outside of Roxboro, NC, serving a two-point Methodist circuit as a student pastor. This circuit was 40 miles north of Durham, NC where Duke University is located. It was the closest work he could find available so he gladly took it. This meant driving 80 miles round trip 5 days a week. He loved Duke and made the Dean's List five out of the six semesters it took to graduate. Dr. Ellis was then Ordained as a Deacon in 1965 at the completion of the first year of seminary and Ordained Elder as he finished seminary. He was very successful in his early appointments and began serving much larger churches by 1980. While serving at Woodland UMC (a church of nearly 1000 members) in Rock Hill, SC he had become a senior minister and began to feel the need for more education especially in planning and administration. He found the perfect program in a Dr. of Ministries program at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, Ill. It involved quite a bit of flying but he enrolled in 1983 and was awarded his doctorate in 1986.
Serving in the U.S. Air Force between 1957 and 1958, Dr. Ellis has been very active within his local community over the years as well. A former board of trustees member for Spartanburg Methodist College, his involvement was honored by having Ellis Hall, a new building, just completed, named in his honor. Ellis Hall was the first building certified as a "Green Building" by the state of SC. No student can graduate from Spartanburg Methodist College without taking one of the core courses taught there. While living in Simpsonville, he was a member of the Rotary Club and served on the governing board, in his fourth year of membership in the club he was elected president; he is a past-president of the Greenville Rose Society, and member of American Rose Society, where he served as a judge from 1974 to 1987. Furthermore, he is a former board of directors, and former chaplain of the Civitan Club, Spartanburg chapter. The Civitan Club is an international organization of volunteer service clubs around the world that assist people in their own communities with various activities such as collecting food for a homeless shelter, volunteering at local retirement homes, and building playgrounds for children with disabilities. Dr. Ellis was honored by his Civitan Club in 1970 with a Distinguished Service Award for his contributions to work done at the Civitan Handicap Workshop. This workshop allowed persons physically and mentally handicapped to learn basic skills that would help them grow toward self-sufficiency both personally and financially.
An avid gardener who grows roses exclusively, Dr. Ellis has been the recipient of many awards over the years for his artistry. He is also the author of the book "Growing Roses Can Be Fun," published in 1982. When he isn't busy preaching and caring for the needs in his congregation or maintaining his rose garden, Dr. Ellis loves genealogy. He is working on a book to be titled "From Sea to Shining Sea" based on his 20 years of research about his Ellis family who came to Virginia in 1642 and settled near Jamestown. He has found datea showing that he has relatives in every state but Utah. After the death of his first wife, Iris Loraine Clardy, in 1996, Dr. Ellis married Dr. Charlotte Elizabeth Lindler (1999). Dr. Lindler practiced pediatrics in Columbia, SC for almost 33 years and is now retired. He also lost his only child, Patricia Loraine Ellis in 1999.
He has been highlighted in Who's Who in Religion and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Edgar Heberton Ellis Jr., Ph.D., has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
