Decades of continuous design and execution of site-specific, liturgical art works sustain Ms. Kapikian's working relationship with Wesley Theological Seminary (WTS) in Washington, D C. As Artist-in-Residence and member of the faculty since 1980, as founder and director of the WTS Center for the Arts and Religion from 1984 to 2008 (renamed the Henry Luce III Center for the Arts and Religion in 2001), she currently holds the title of Founder and Director Emerita of the Henry Luce III Center for the Arts and Religion, and since 2009, Distinguished Artist-in-Residence.
From 1957 to 1959 Ms. Kapikian pursued studio art training at the School of Fine Arts at Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University). Following a transfer to the University of Pennsylvania and then marriage, she completed her studies at the University of Maryland with a B.A. in 1963. In 1979 she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Masters of Theological Studies from WTS.
Ms. Kapikian contributes to numerous endeavors involving art and religion, theology, and spirituality. Appointed to the Fabric and Fine Arts Committee of the Washington National Cathedral from 2006 to 2012, she previously served on the board of directors for the Episcopal Church and Visual Arts from 2002 to 2006. From 1991 to 1997 Ms. Kapikian served on the Commission on Worship and the Arts of the National Council of Churches. Her persistent output as a studio artist interfacing with an academic institution shaped and defined her as a visionary leader in her field of expertise.
In the early 80's, Ms. Kapikian co-founded and remained a long-term member of the steering committee of the Arts and Religion Forum of the Washington Theological Consortium. Following service as a board member of the Interfaith Forum on Religion, Art, and Architecture (IFRAA) from 1983 to 1985 and 1987 to 1990, she simultaneously served on the board of directors of the California based Schuyler Institute for Worship and the Arts from 1987 to 1990.
Ms. Kapikian was appointed as sole juror of CIVA's (Christians in the Visual Arts) nationally advertised and touring exhibition "Celebrating the Sacred in Contemporary Textile Art, 1997". Her own works have been exhibited in 17 juried, nationally advertised call-for-entries exhibitions. Five were IFRAA biennial exhibitions from 1979 to 1990 in which she earned three merit awards. Her works have been featured in group shows at St. Thomas More Newman Center, Bowling Green University, recognized by the Archdiocese of Chicago, and honored in the biennial exhibitions of the Liturgical Art Guild of Ohio on multiple occasions between 1985 and 2001. Ms. Kapikian teaches, lectures in college, university, and ecumenical contexts, and contributes to professional journals, notably to CIVA's "Seen" journal and website, and The Society for the Arts in Religious and Theological Studies journal "ARTS: The Arts in Religious and Theological Studies". She authored "Art in Service of the Sacred" in 2006 and "Through the Christian Year: An Illustrated Guide" in 1983, both published by Abingdon Press.
In light of her exceptional undertakings, Ms. Kapikian has accrued honors throughout her impressive career. In 2007 she was inducted into the North American Academy of Liturgy, and in 1992 she was recognized as a College of Preachers Fellow of the Washington National Cathedral. Also in 1992 she was honored by induction into the John Wesley Society at WTS, and in 1978 was inducted into the National Society of Arts and Letters. Ms. Kapikian was selected for inclusion in many editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Woman.
