L(ois) Jane Hastings Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

    SEATTLE, WA, April 26, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to name L. Jane Hastings a Lifetime Achiever. An accomplished listee, Ms. Hastings celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Ms. Hastings has served as the president and incorporating member of Architecta, P.S., in Seattle. In 1974, she founded The Hastings Group Architects after working in private practice from 1959 designing over 500 mostly residential buildings in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. She worked as an architect at various firms from 1956 to 1959. Retiring in 2002 she closed her firm.

Ms. Hastings has also been involved in academia as a lecturer of design at the University of Washington in 1976, and as a part time instructor of architectural drafting at Seattle Community College from 1969 to 1980. Early in her career, Ms. Hastings served as an architect at the Boeing Airplane Company for three years.

In 1952, Ms. Hastings received a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Washington. She graduated as a member of Tau Sigma Delta and she was awarded with the Alpha Rho Chi Medal for her promising future in architecture. In 1953, she became the eighth woman in history to be licensed as an architect in the State of Washington. After graduation, she spent two years in recreation work for the U.S. Army in Germany.

In 1958, Ms. Hastings continued her studies (while working) at the University of Washington as a postgraduate student in urban planning. She was certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards in 1958. Ms. Hastings has authored special features in newspaper publications and has published articles in professional journals. She is also a contributor to Sunset Magazine.

Ms. Hastings' experience in architecture expands beyond her career in the field. In 2011, she served as a member of the Architect Selection Committee for the Washington State Capital Carillon Project. She was an active member of the Accreditation Team of the New Jersey Institute of Technology School of Architecture in 1992, and of the University of Oregon College of Architecture in 1991. She was also a member of the Dean's advisory committee of the College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Washington in 1993-1995.

Ms. Hastings served as a speaker at the Hong Kong Pacific Rim Forum in 1987. In 1979, Ms. Hastings was a member of the citizens advance committee of the Seattle Land Use Administration Task Force. She served as regional public chairman of the advisory panel on architectural and engineering services of the General Service Administration. In addition, she was a member of the Mayor's Committee on Architectural Barriers for the Handicapped and member of the advisory board of the University of Washington's YMCA. Ms. Hastings has acted as a design juror for national and local competitions, including the Red Cedar Shingle and AIA Awards, the Current Use Honor Awards by the American Institute of Architects, the Exhibit of School Architecture Award, and the AIA and Seattle Times' Home of the Year Annual Award.

Ms. Hastings served her community as a member of the board of the American Women for International Understanding (AWIU); she acted as a delegate in Egypt, Israel, Japan, Korea, and USSR, and as a guest of the Soviet Women's Conference in 1983. She was also a leader of People to People's 1990 international delegation of women architects to China. She served as a member on the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board, 1980-1983, and the Design Construction Review Board for the Seattle School District, 1985-1987. Member and served on the 1987 Advisory Committee, of the Museum of History and Industry. In 2008 she received the Women's University Club of Seattle, Brava Award.

For her outstanding work in her field and for her influence and contributions to the city of Seattle, Ms. Hastings has been featured in "Shaping Seattle Architecture: A Historical Guide to the Architects;" the book's focus is on Seattle's architectural history, and Ms. Hastings modern contributions to the design and structure of the city have led to her inclusion in a text of mostly late figures in architecture. Ms. Hastings drawings, photos and awards are in the collection of the "International Archive of Women in Architecture" at Virginia Tech University, Blacksburg, VA. In 2014 a new gallery at the University of Washington's Gould Hall was named in honor of Ms. Hastings and husband, Norman J. Johnston.

Ms. Hastings was also named to West Seattle High School's Hall of Fame in 1989. Some of her design awards include the American Institute of Architects (AIA) House & Home/The American Home, "Homes for Better Living", national Merit award 1971, and Seattle Times' Home of the Month Annual Award in 1968., the Exhibition Award from the Seattle Chapter of the American Institute of Architects in 1970, the Environmental Award by the Seattle King County Board of Realtors in 1970 and 1977, and the Special Honor Award by the Washington Aggregates and Concrete Association and American Institute of Steel Construction in 1993 for the Flaming Geyser State Park Bridge. She was also a grantee of the National Endowment of the Arts.

Ms. Hastings is a 1980 Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and has served the organization in a wide range of capacities; she was the first woman to serve as chancellor of the AIA College of Fellows in 1992, and some of her other various positions within the organization include director representing the NW and Pacific Region, 1982-84 & 86, president of the Seattle chapter, and president of the senior council. She has been honored for her work in the institute as the recipient of the Seattle Chapter Medal in 1995, the Northwest and Pacific Region Medal of Honor in 2002, the Leslie N. Boney Spirit of Fellowship Award in 2003, and the Richard Upjohn Fellows Medal.

Ms. Hastings also held leadership positions in other institutions, including in 1969 serving as vice president, secretary general, and delegate of the Union of International Architects (UIFA), whose congresses have been held in Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Iran, Japan, Korea, Monaco, Mongolia, Romania, South Africa and the United States. She also was an AIA delegate representing UIFA before the AIA 1990 Congress of Montreal. She served in the American Arbitration Association as an arbitrator, and she was a member of the Council of Design Professions, the Association of Women in Construction, the Allied Arts Seattle, and Fashion Group. Ms. Hastings is the daughter of Harry and Camille (Pugh) Hastings. She has been married to Norman John Johnston for more than 45 years. Ms. Hastings has been featured in Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in American Women, and Who's Who in the World (32nd and 33rd editions)
